Governor makes disaster declarations in the wake of fatal New Year’s Eve tornado

Several members of the County Clerks Association met in Little Rock in December for lunch, then visited with some of their legislators and Constitutional officers, including Secretary of State Charlie Daniels, with whom the Clerks have worked closely. The term-limited Daniels made a transition Jan. 1; he is now the Auditor of State.

Hopefully, the first day of the year did not set the tone for the rest of 2011. Gov. Mike Beebe on Jan. 1 declared Benton and Washing- ton Counties state disaster areas after an EF3 tornado hit Northwest Arkansas, killing four people in the Cincinnati community. Te declaration could potentially defray cleanup costs for local jurisdictions. “Washington and Benton Counties per- formed admirably in their response to this un- seasonal severe weather,” Beebe said. “Despite the tragic loss of life and property, the efficient, cooperative efforts in both counties ensured a rapid response and an important first step to- ward recovery.” As always in Arkansas, volunteers played a significant role in the response. Within a few hours of the storms, so many people had shown up to help in Cincinnati that officials had to politely ask others to stay home.
