New Mixed-Use Development Planned
in North Carolina Carl Walker Inc. calls Legacy Village in Mooresville, NC, a
perfect example of the new type of mixed-use, live-work-play “urban/suburban” developments that are springing up around the country. Completion is expected in four years. Buyers are said to be closing on the first phase of the residences, with the remaining structures in the design stage. And its parking decks will be an example of facilities that
are unobtrusive, secure, and convenient without compromis- ing the original master plan intent for open spaces and peo- ple-friendly streets. Two seven-story parking decks will be wrapped by retail shops and businesses on the ground level and condo flats on the upper levels, for a total of approximate- ly 600 spaces. Carl Walker is providing parking consulting as well as
structural engineering services that include all levels of the parking area, the ground-level retail structures and all founda- tions. The firm says it will complete full design services on Park- ing Deck 1 in the first phase, and Deck 2 will go through full design within two to five years.
Decatur Installs New
Payment System Fumbling for change at the most popular surface parking
meters in Decatur, GA, is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Thanks to a new system being piloted in the city, putting time on the meter is as easy as dialing the phone. The system, provided as a collaboration between Streets-
mart (
www.streetsmarttechnology.com) and MobileNOW! (
www.mobilenowsolutions.com), allows single-slot parking patrons to call a central number posted on the meter and charge their parking time remotely. Users arrive at the space, call into the system’s automated
line displayed on the meter and follow the phone prompts to enter the space number also posted there. The system then transmits a message to the meter that posts the purchased time on the meter at that space. Live operators also are available to assist users. The companies say the test will use 54 of about 400 park-
ing meters in downtown Decatur to gauge the system’s effec- tiveness and public acceptance. If the test is successful, the sys- tem eventually will expand to all of Decatur’s parking meters.
