What’s Cooking in the Kitchen of Santa?


½ c brown sugar 1 egg 1 t vanilla 1 pkg Hershey Kisses


Cream butter, egg, sugars,


peanut butter and vanilla. Sift flour, soda and salt. Mix well into creamed ingredients. Drop by teaspoonfuls and bake at 350 degrees for ten minutes. Remove from oven and put Hershey Kiss in center of each cookie while still warm. Makes 4 dozen.


Quick & Easy Pumpkin Cupcakes


What a fun and festive time


of the year it is! Delicious foods are always an important part of any celebration and this is certainly true for Christmas. Below are several more holi- day treats to try, compliments of our local North Buncombe cooks:

ville Chex Muddy Buddies


9 c rice/corn/chocolate Chex cereal (or combination)


1 c semisweet chocolate chips


½ c peanut butter ¼ c butter or margarine 1 t vanilla 1 ½ c powdered sugar


Into large bowl, measure


cereal; set aside. In 1-qt mi- crowavable bowl, microwave chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter uncovered on high one minute; stir. Microwave 30 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in vanilla. Pour mixture over ce- real, stirring until evenly coat- ed. Pour into 2-gallon reseal- able ziploc bag. Add powdered sugar.


Seal bag; shake until


well coated. Spread on waxed paper to cool. Store in airtight container in refrigerator.


Hershey Kiss Cookies


1 c flour 1 t soda ½ t salt ½ c butter ½ c peanut butter ½ c sugar


1 pkg (18.25 oz.) spice cake mix


1 can (15 oz.) Libby’s 100% Pure Pumpkin


3 large eggs 1/3 c vegetable oil 1/3 c water 1 container (16 oz.) prepared cream cheese or vanilla frost- ing


Preheat oven to 350 degrees.


Paper-line or grease 24 muffin cups. Blend cake mix, pumpkin, eggs, oil and water in large mixer bowl until moistened. Beat on me- dium speed for two minutes. Pour batter into prepared muffin cups, filling 3/4 full. Bake for 18 to 23 minutes or until wooden pick in- serted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans on wire racks for 10 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely. Spread cupcakes with frosting. Decorate with as- sorted sprinkles, if desired.


Kristie Jones of Weaverville Carrot Cake


1 c sugar 3/4 c vegetable oil 2 eggs 1/2 t salt 1 t vanilla 1 1/2 carrots (grated or shred- ded)


1 t cinnamon 1 t baking soda 1 t baking powder 1 1/2 c white flour 1/2 c chopped nuts (optional)


Blend sugar, oil, eggs, salt and


vanilla. Add carrots. Mix in flour, baking soda, baking powder and cinnamon (which have been sifted together). Stir in nuts (optional).

Asheville Spiced Tea


4 t nutmeg 4 t cinnamon 3 c sugar 2 c Country Time Lemonade Mix (with sugar added)


1 (1 lb 2 oz) jar Tang 2 c instant Lipton tea (no sugar added)


Mix all ingredients together.


Makes approximately 6 Kerr brand small mason preserving jars. To serve, use 2 teaspoons of mix in cup of boiling water. Great for Christmas gifts!!


Reindeer Food


1 c light corn syrup 1 c white sugar 1 c smooth peanut butter 10 c cornflakes cereal


Cook syrup and sugar un-


til mixture comes to boil. Stir constantly; do not overcook. Remove from heat, add peanut butter, and stir until smooth. Pour mixture over cornflakes in large bowl. Mix until cereal is thoroughly coated. Spread in buttered 9 x 13 inch pan and press down lightly with but- tered hands. When cool, cut into squares.


Sausage Balls


1 lb hot sausage 1 lb mild sausage 12 oz sharp cheese (soft- ened)


12 oz mellow cheese (soft- ened)


4 c Bisquick Mix all ingredients. Roll


into small balls. Place on cook- ie sheets. Bake at 400 degrees for 10-15 minutes or until done (depends upon the size). Best served warm.

BlackHawks down Mountain Heritage


Te North Buncombe boys’ basketball team defeated Mountain


Heritage on Tuesday (Nov. 30) 75-63. Sam Rector led four scorers in double digits with 19 points. Te girls fell to the Cougars 64-49.

Swim team kicks off its season


Te North Buncombe High


School swim team split its double- dual season opener Nov. 22 against Erwin and Asheville, with both the girls’ and boys’ teams defeat- ing the Warriors but losing to the Cougars. Te boys defeated Erwin 61-36


and lost to Asheville 103-39 at the match held at the BlackHawks’ home pool at Mars Hill College. Te girls breezed past Erwin 102- 26 and lost to Asheville 83-62. Kaley Ballard is again coaching


the BlackHawks this season. Tis year’s team consists of Am-
