EUROPEAN 3D UPCOMING PRODUCTIONS Covering all the angles
The crop of forthcoming European 3D productions includes projects based on comic-book favourites, children’s characters and sports events, as well as thrillers. Geoffrey Macnab reports
AFRICAN SAFARI 3D After animated features Fly Me To The Moon and Sammy’s Adventures: The Secret Passage, Ben Stassen of Belgium’s nWave is turning to live action for his $25m 3D wildlife documentary African Safari, which explores attempts by conservationists to re-establish animal migration in Africa. The film started production in November. Stassen has been making 3D films since the mid-1990s, often for exhibition in theme parks, with nWave’s credits including large-format films such as Wild Safari 3D and African Adventure: Safari In The Okavango. African Safari marks the company’s first full-scale theatrical 3D feature. Stassen tested cameras from Arriflex, Sony and RED for the project. Contact nWave

ARTHUR CHRISTMAS Backed by Sony, Bristol-based animation house Aardman Animations is hard at work on two animated 3D features, Arthur Christmas and The Pirates! — In An Adventure With Scientists. The CG-animated Arthur Christmas will arrive first, with release scheduled for November 2011. Scripted by Peter Baynham (Borat, Bruno) and Sarah Smith, who directs, the film depicts the North Pole as a high-tech installation where Santa Claus works with his ‘combat elves’. The voice cast includes James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Ashley Jensen. Contact Aardman Animations

BATTLE OF WARSAW 1920 The first Polish 3D movie is a full-blown period epic directed by Jerzy Hoffman, with cinematography by acclaimed DoP Slawomir Idziak. The film, which recently finished shooting, tells the story of a Polish soldier (Borys Szyc) unjustly accused of betraying his country. He desperately trying to prove his innocence while his lover (Natasza Urbanska) joins the army to find him. This epic yarn was shot with six 3D rigs (four mirror rigs and two side by side) with Sony HDC-P1, Sony PWM-EX3 cameras and Panasonic AG-HMR10 and two sets of Zeiss DigiPrimes.

DREDD Currently shooting in Cape Town, South Africa, Dredd is backed by Reliance BIG Pictures and IM Global and made through Andrew Macdonald’s UK outfit DNA Films. The $45m project is based on the 2000AD comic-book character. Pete Travis, whose credits include Vantage Point and Endgame, directs from a script by Alex Garland. HORRID HENRY: THE MOVIE The UK’s Vertigo Films were trailblazers with their hugely successful StreetDance 3D, one of the first independent UK movies to shoot in 3D. Made with great
speed to reach cinemas before the release of potential rival Step Up 3D, StreetDance 3D made $18.3m (£11.5m) in five weeks. Vertigo is back on the 3D path with Novel Entertainment for a live-action version of Horrid Henry — based on the popular children’s book character — which the company bills as the first ever British children’s movie to be filmed in 3D. Anjelica Huston and Richard E Grant headline a starry cast. Vision3 has been appointed to handle 3D stereography on the film, currently shooting in London. Stereography will be led by Vision3’s Matt Smith, working alongside head stereographer and founding partner Chris Parks. The stereo team will be using Element Technica’s Quasar rig, shooting on RED cameras. The REDs are being supplied by Take2 Films, which has invested in 3D equipment specifically to support the project. In addition Vision3 will be using SI-2k cameras for specialist shots.
