EUROPEAN 3D POST-PRODUCTION POST OVERVIEW: GERMANY The growing number of international shoots is helping to develop 3D capabilities
Thanks to its facilities and generous production incentives, Germany is attracting major international productions, which is also benefitting the territory’s post sector and its 3D expansion. For example, Constantin Film’s 3D
The Three Musketeers, directed by Paul WS Anderson, is currently shooting at Babelsberg. And while Constantin is understood to be taking the VFX shots to Canada, it is using Munich-based ARRI for Alexa cameras (on PACE rigs), cloning tapes and providing online dailies at Studio Babelsberg. ARRI is also supplying key kit and on-location services for Constantin/Rat Pack’s Vicky And The Treasure Of The Gods. “By attracting these 3D films to the
studio, we’re building stereoscopic skills among local freelance teams who can apply their knowledge to future projects here,” says Charlie Woebcken, CEO of Studio Babelsberg. Thanks to its alliance with Paradise

POST OVERVIEW: SPAIN
Spanish houses are improving 3D capability — but live-action work has so far been limited
As elsewhere, Spain’s post-production community has invested in 3D kit but live- action work has so far been limited to commercials and one-off TV events. Molinare (Barcelona), Infinia, The Frank Barton Company and local outposts of Deluxe and Technicolor all have at least one DCI 3D projection system as well as workflow tools, notably the Mistika compositing system from Spanish manufacturer SGO. Equipment rental firm Ovide is kitted with five beam-splitter rigs, monitors and accessories for location shoots. “Most companies are making the effort to implement stereo into their services,”

reports stereographer Enrique Criado. “Experience may be limited but because salaries are generally lower, production costs can be cheaper than in many other EU countries.” More activity is found in feature animation where Dygra Films is readying 2D and
3D versions of its fourth feature, Holy Night, for a December release. “We began teaching our artists to work in 3D two years ago and created our own software plug-ins,” says executive producer Lucas Mackey. “We storyboarded Holy Night from inception to be a 3D film.” Artefacto Producciones is producing stop-motion picture The Apostle (O Apostolo),

importing the stereo team behind Coraline. Barcelona studio Apuntolapospo, currently post-producing Ikiru Films’ 3D animation Tadeo Jones, is arguably the powerhouse of Spanish post with capacity for a wide range of projects. It handled the Imax 3D documentary Magic Journey To Africa and helped produce the world’s first live 3D bullfight for Canal Plus. Its 2011 schedule includes stereoscopic post on Bigas Luna’s Second Origin, produced by Productions Antartida. n

— Berlin’s The Post Republic is showing most 3D post-production activity in the region. It can expect to host UK-based Vertigo Films’ 3D slate as well as DNA Films’ Dredd, currently in production in South Africa. Director Wim Wenders brought
Pictorion Das Werk on board for pre- production R&D on Pina two years ago. The facility also performed all the post including managing rushes captured to data and tapes, editing and grade. The facility can call on Los Angeles-based stereo VFX boutique Gradient FX, led by a former Das Werk CTO and co-founder. Studio Hamburg facilities include 3D
colour correction on Nucoda Film Master and 3D technical approval. It completed picture post on Lang Lang: The Third Dimension, a musical project for EuroArts and Sony packaged for Blu-ray 3D. Band Pro Munich, the German wing of a leading Los Angeles kit-rental house, has ILM- developed Kernercam 3D rigs exclusively for hire in Europe as well as the expertise of former ILM engineering director Fred Meyers, whose credits include Yogi Bear 3D.
