ROUNDS IMAGINARY FORCES

Named after the classic Four Tet album – or at least we assume this is correct – Southend-On-Sea quartet Rounds are a surprisingly adaptable band. Usually when dance and indie meet, it sounds like a car crash. Rounds, however, have lent subtlety to their beats and melodies, and clearly understand the ebb and flow of electronica rather than simply stealing the sounds. They’ve released a few 7” records, including the latest single Architecture, and are a slowly growing concern. www.myspace.com/rounds1234

Now here’s a challenging listen. Imaginary Forces deal out sparse, machinery sounds caught in arresting loops, abrupt stop/start glitch patterns or simple static-like drones. Repetition is a religion on these records (all available at their Bandcamp site) reminiscent of the sparser or harsher elements of Autechre. What remains though is a skeletal idea, so articulately managed that the challenge is less of a chore and more of a pleasure. http://imaginaryforces.bandcamp.com

ANCIENT SHORES DELIVER POST-HARDCORE CARNAGE WITH VOCALS BORN FROM FURNACES…

JACOB’S STORIES

A solo artist seemingly wanting to channel the histrionics of Matt Bellamy into similarly spiralling songs, but with a more introverted vibe, Jacob’s Stories – or Stuart Warwick as he is usually known – is an eloquent outlet. Pianos, strings, electronics are all wrapped within his narratives while his excellent voice sails across the top. Nothing feels overwrought and it all builds carefully, without leaving space in which to get bored or feel cheated. www.myspace.com/jacobsstoriesband
