REVIEWED JACKSON JS32R Dinky &

JS32 Rhoads Legendary rock guitar brand Jackson unleashes a new range based on affordable yet well spec’d versions of its most classic designs...

Words: Tim Slater

Last month we took a look at the Charvel San Dimas and Sol Cal Pro Mod series and now we turn our attention to another 80s legend: Jackson Guitars. In common with its former partner Charvel, Jackson is enjoying a renaissance under the ownership and guidance of the mighty Fender Musical Instruments Corp. that has thankfully preserved both brands own unique identity for today’s generation of guitar players to experience and enjoy. Generally speaking, the main

difference between Charvel and Jackson is that the early Charvel instruments were often based on

hot rodded versions of the Fender Stratocaster, which reflected Charvel’s origins as a manufacturer of replacement parts, whereas Jackson were bolder, flashier and more experimental. Original company founder Grover Jackson blended his own original design concepts with his favourite Fender and Gibson elements and in doing so helped to dramatically improve playability and performance compared to the established leading brands of the period. An early association with the late Randy Rhoads and latterly the new wave of 80s thrash metal bands including Anthrax and Slayer established Jackson as a cutting edge manufacturer but its more conventional looking models like the Soloist and Dinky also proved popular among all-round rock guitar players who wanted a versatile and highly spec’d guitar that still felt vaguely familiar. When Fender acquired Jackson a few years ago the event caused much salivating among guitar fans that were anxious to see one of their favourite brands make a long awaited return to the limelight. It’s taken a wee while to get everything fully into gear but now the ball is well and truly rolling. The JS3 series is designed as an affordable alternative to the high- end U.S. Jackson guitars and is based on five popular Jackson models: the

Rhoads, Kelly, Warrior, King V and the slimmed-down super Strat style Dinky. The JS3 series are all fully spec’d with pukka licensed Floyd Rose locking vibratos, Jackson’s unmistakable MOTO shark fin fingerboard inlays, compound radius fingerboards and plenty of pointy bits in all the right places. If you are tempted thus far, the JS3 series definitely promises to deliver the full-on Jackson vibe at very wallet- friendly prices.
