THE LOOP HEAD PENINSULA, COUNTY CLARE

The Loop Head Peninsula means days filled with

great activities - sea and shore angling, diving, canoeing, bird and dolphin watching, walking, cycling, golfing and more.

exciting activities

Watersports: Surrounded by water, Loop Head is perfect for watersports. Sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing and surfing can all be enjoyed and Kilkee has its own training centre on the beach-front providing courses for all ages and levels of experience. The coastline is a natural base for diving and it attracts divers from all over the world. The late and great Jacques Cousteau declared that it was the best diving spot in Europe. Kilkee has a fully-equipped diving centre which caters to both beginners and experts.

Sea and Shore Angling are major attractions. Carrigaholt and Kilbaha are ideal harbours from which to go fishing. Being in the sheltered Shannon Estuary makes it possible to go fishing in all weather conditions. Further out, at the end of the Peninsula, are some of the best fishing grounds to be found in Europe. Shore Angling on the Peninsula is also excellent and gives you access to a wide variety of fishing venues and species.

Bird Watching: The Shannon Estuary supports the largest numbers of wintering wildfowl in Ireland while the Loop Head headland, near the lighthouse, is the end of major flyways of birds migrating south for the winter from North America, Greenland, Iceland and the Arctic. In summertime the Peninsula provides safe breeding and wintering grounds for a large number of birds from Europe and Africa. Tullaher Bog, a designated National Heritage Area, and the Bridges of Ross are also havens for birdwatchers.

Walking/Cycling: Loop Head Peninsula is perfect for walking and cycling. No matter where you start from, you can have a circular route, as long or as short as you like. Walks, particularly the cliff walks,

are just spectacular. There are two sign-posted cycling trail routes – the Dolphin Cycleway (27km) and the Loop Head Cycleway (65km).
