Loop Head

wild and wonderful

The Loop Head Peninsula, in Ireland’s County Clare, is a wild and wonderful peninsula — a designated European Destination of Excellence for Aquatic Tourism. Set between the Atlantic Ocean and the Shannon Estuary, just two kilometres of land saves it from island status. It is idyllic for all forms of water-related leisure activities from cliff and beach walks to dolphin- watching, swimming, angling, diving and sailing.

If you are a watersports enthusiast you can enjoy a dramatic tour of the spectacular cliffs by sea-kayak, go sailing off the blue-flag Kilkee beach, go diving off the Kilkee Reef or shark fishing off the Peninsula.

If you are a nature lover, it is paradise. The Peninsula is home to over 120 dolphins and a dolphin watching boat trip from Carrigaholt is a special experience. Loop Head is also a haven for wildlife and bird watchers.

If you enjoy spectacular scenery you can drive or cycle a circular route and experience incredible land and seascapes from the Bridges of Ross to the Loop Head Lighthouse. There are also superb walks, many along dramatic cliff-top routes.

Beautiful beaches. The Peninsula has several beautiful beaches. The Kilkee blue-flag beach is a family favourite and is regarded as one of the safest bathing places in Ireland.

This is only a taste of what’s in store – add in great entertainment, great food and accommodation and the warmest of warm welcomes and you’ll begin to get a sense of what the Loop Head Peninsula offers.
