Maidstone Borough Council 7

Maidstone’s newest listed building is also its youngest. The former Barclays Bank on Middle Row, Maidstone – now known as Sunley House – was listed Grade II following an application by the council to English Heritage.

Designed in the late 1950s, Sunley House is the work of Sir William Holford, who is famous for post war reconstruction and town planning for the City of London, Cambridgeshire County Council and Corby New Town.

Post-1945 buildings have to be exceptionally important to be listed. English Heritage call the building: “a bold and accomplished piece of modern architectural design which employs a variety of high quality materials and sculptural decoration to create a rich composition of colour, pattern and surface texture.”

The stylish main staircase and stone carvings such as the four coins facing the Medway, the Barclays griffin logos on the High Street, and two figures facing Bank Street are noted examples of its special features.

Rural business forums network

A groundbreaking new business network, bringing together rural businesses across the UK, is being rolled out in Maidstone Borough.

The non-profit making Network of Rural Business Forums (NRBF) offers many benefits within an annual membership of £50.

Members can advertise jobs, commercial property, items for sale and local events on the NRBF website. They get free inclusion in local online and printed directories. A printed directory is sent to all households and businesses in the area.

The plan is to help rural villages set up their own business forums, enabling them to network, build business and share expertise, whilst enjoying access to discount schemes; and free legal, HR, and accountancy advice; and unlimited counselling extending to employees, friends and family.

The successful Marden Business Forum launched four years ago now has more than 140 active members. Chairman, Elaine Collins, formerly a senior member of a national media company and a founder member of the Marden Forum, said: “The NRBF is a non-profit making body, in which everyone contributes their time, resources and skills voluntarily for the benefit of fellow members. It’s local, social and comes with a whole host of benefits, discounts and support.

“Marden Business Forum has proved that the formula works, with businesses reporting a substantial increase in turnover. The aim of the NRBF is now to share that success with other local business communities. It has been proven without doubt that local work is more profitable, with both the buyer and the seller able to enjoy the savings.”
