Rural retreat – so close to town
THE Old Plantation has the character and charm of a rural Kentish pub. It is tucked away down a lane and looks like a Tudor yeoman's house but, surprisingly, it is less than a minute's drive from the busy A20 Ashford Road. Nigel Williams, who
recently took over the lease with wife Susan, said: "We are Bearsted's best kept secret." The couple are confident
their customer base will extend well beyond the village once people have sampled the delights of their new menu. It coincides with the arrival
of a new chef and a complete refurbishment of the kitchen at the 15th century, Grade II- listed building. There are 24 covers in the
cosy restaurant area, plus another dozen or so in an intimate upstairs room. Susan said: "We aim to use
fresh local produce whenever possible. It will be traditional pub food, including a really good quality Sunday roast. "We also want to introduce
curry and steak nights. High standards are what we are focusing on." The pub is child-friendly,
with a slide and swings in the garden. Well-behaved dogs are also welcome in the bar area. Wi-fi facilities are available,
a bonus for businessmen needing to get online. A quiz night is held every
