INDULGENCES spinology It’s not often that a new DJ successfully breaks into the scene in
Southern California, but we think we’ve found the next sensational spinologist right here in Orange County. DJ Feliciano has been mak- ing people move and groove for over 14 years. From his first music manipulation event, Feliciano has been perfecting his craft in clubs across Los Angeles and now Orange County. The Rage Monthly sat down with DJ Feliciano for some insight into the mastermind behind the beats at OC’s newest gay hotspot, IBIZA in Huntington Beach.
The Rage Monthly: How did you discover your career in spinning? DJ Feliciano: I actually began my musical journey with a simple two-channel DJ
mixer while I was in middle school. I hooked up a couple portable CD players and very crudely tried to emulate the DJs I was seeing on TV. Eventually I bought my first turn- tables in high school and it took off from there. I was the kid that went to piano lessons from the age of five all the way up to my early teens and at that point I just wanted to do something different. Even though my parents didn’t think DJ’ing was necessarily musical, I would disagree. All of the concepts of harmony and timing that I learned in classical training translated directly to proper mixing of music. Rage: What is one of the things that most appeals to you about your job as a DJ? DJ Feliciano: The most appealing thing about my job as a DJ is that I get paid to have fun. I hardly would consider rocking a dance floor work; it’s my passion being shared with all who are within earshot. When the dance floor is packed and people are having a blast, it is the greatest high one can experience. Rage: What are some of your hobbies that you enjoy when you’re not spinning? DJ Feliciano: When I am not spinning, I am all over the place. I love movies. My guilty pleasure would also be those darn Real Housewives on Bravo TV. I also spend a great deal of time in Lake Havasu wake boarding and enjoying the desert. Rage: What’s your specialty and the thing which sets you apart from the rest? DJ Feliciano: My background in DJ’ing has always held a connection to dance music.
I originally was inspired by Richard “Humpy” Vision, and yeah, I know he changed his name to Bad Boy Bill. Over time, I have evolved and find myself loving all sorts of dance music. Just like a good story, I feel like a good DJ set should build in intensity and reach a climax. It is something that is really hard to do, but when it happens, it is simply magic. Playing my residency at Ibiza, I do find myself playing a lot of remixes, but I try and find remixes that are unique and different from what everyone else is playing. Rage: What words would your friends use to describe you? DJ Feliciano: My friends would probably describe me as being compassionate, car- ing and possessing a huge heart. My friends and family really are important to me and I have always been the one they have come to when they are having problems. I am also extremely loyal to those who matter. Rage: What’s your day job? DJ Feliciano: Right now my day job is school. I am one semester away from complet-
ing my degree at California State University Fullerton. I am majoring in Radio, Television and Film with a minor in Public Relations. It has taken me an absurdly long time to get to this point, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Rage: Where can we find you out and about? DJ Feliciano: I am at Ibiza Bar and Nightclub. For New Year’s I am really excited to be headlining the party being thrown at Ibiza. We are expecting a huge crowd and are going all out to give those in attendance a New Year’s Eve they won’t soon forget. It will be a one-of-a kind event for the Orange County LGBT community. Also, starting December 8, Ibiza is launching a new, strictly electronic night that will be called “This is Ibiza.” We will be showcasing local DJs to provide something new and exciting for fans of dance music.
