Holidays mark the passing of time; especially this holiday season with a new year right around the cor- ner. For some this is a joyous time, for others sadness pervades celebrations as memories of loved ones and former events surface. Wherever you are in this time of holiday celebrations, may you fi nd peace, comfort and joy; while remembering the past and creating new memories.
A recent visit to my childhood home state of
Louisiana created new joys and poignant memories in my life. A few years ago I met a fellow Cajun storyteller in Naples, Florida. Although we had been total strangers, after swapping tales we soon discovered that we were related—our great grandparents were siblings! Before we parted ways, she invited me to the Giant Omelette Festival Celebration in her hometown of Abbeville, Louisiana. How could I resist? This celebration, steeped in history and tradition, can be traced back to Southern France where Napoleon was said to have dined on a delicious omelet and summoned the villagers to feed his soldiers an omelet feast the next day. Joining in the revelry at the 26-year celebration, I enjoyed a portion of the 5,026 egg omelet fl avored with crawfi sh and a taste of Louisiana Tabasco sauce. The feast was accompanied by a continuous fl ow of Louisiana music, dancing in the streets, and the telling of a story or two in the historical Magdalene Square. I was reminded of the small world we live in. Synchronistic encounters were more the rule than the exception on this trip. Chance meetings led to comments like, “then you must know my sister-n-law?” My motto for the trip was, “Let go of expectations and let synchronicity be my guide.” I had the joy of meeting Rita, a photograph artist, who shared her newly developing talents that arrived after the loss of her son. I also met Odis, a wood craftsman, who’s Crab Grabber became a new visual aid for my Talking Crawfi sh story. One after another, delightful people with colorful stories joined me in my journey. Each person was like a beautiful gemstone that made my trip memories sparkle and shine. And then I was off to visit with family and friends in my hometown for more sparkly connections, old and new. We don’t need to wait for holidays to make special moments in our lives. As my granddaughter said, “Grammy, why do you have to go away? I’m here.” Oh so true, we don’t have to go “away” to fi nd love, but sometimes going away brings the awareness of love closer to home. May your holidays be fi lled with love, light and synchronistic encounters. Enjoy your moments, be in the now.
