her degree and became one. But life has a way of dictating what we can and cannot do and for Ylva, the fi- nal decider was a weak stomach. "I made a terrible nurse with my sen- sitive stomach. I threw up all the time when people had injuries. They needed help and all I could do was find the nearest bathroom, some- times I didn't make it," she says in a deadpan sort of way. "After a few episodes of that I figured I better find another kind of job." The 'other' kind of job sort of
found her in a roundabout way. Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, she was an only child of that marriage and indulged by a loving mother, In- grid. She will tell you she inherited her love of horses from her Father who had her in front of him in the saddle from the time she was two months old. At seven, when her father died, she was given her first pony from England, named Punch, to start showing and competing. Graduating to horses, and espe-
cially the young jumpers, they found a young prospect for Ylva named Little Too. This horse was the full brother of Hugo Simon's horse, Lit- tle One, and although she showed

all over Europe it was al- ways in her mind to go to the USA at some point. Her father had another
daughter, Viveka, who had married, lived in Connecti- cut and Ylva longed to visit her as much as she could. In 1989, on one of those visits, a friend mentioned a riding job out in Califor- nia that she could take for the few weeks she was here before returning to Sweden. Flying to Temecula to meet Diane Grod, Ylva began a journey that would change her life completely. That two week job turned into a
