AND A CULTURE OF DIALOGUE

Khaled Nabhah, 21: For me, our training course in human rights, advocacy and conflict transformation was a turning point. Students from all parties started to be closer and friendlier, we were more relaxed with each other. After the training course there was a workshop to discuss possible actions, which was very interesting. We all decided that the first action should be to paint the wall of the Al Azhar University. The day we did it was a very nice day, a unique experience in a really friendly atmosphere. It was like collecting the olives in autumn, with the whole family working together.

Alaa Al-Suse, 22: The training course increased our information about human rights conflicts, but the most important thing was how students from Hamas and Fatah changed their behavior towards each other. At the beginning they started to fight and were angry with each other, and after a few days they became friendlier, knew each other more, and started to discuss everything in a good manner. At the end of the training course they even became friends. We learnt to discuss our programs without being angry or fanatic. When we painted the wall, we all worked together like one hand, one completing what the other one did. There were some problems after we painted the wall, but our success covers all of that. It wasn't only painting the wall, it was about demonstrating to all people in Gaza that we are here, that

we can work together and that we have a lot of things to do.

PROMOTING A CULTURE OF DIALOGUE. One of the main goals of Sharek is to create a strong and stable youth community. Right now, as the community is torn politically, also the youth is divided in different parties. So this project, funded by UNDP and the Carter Center, aims at spreading the concept of accepting the other and promoting a culture of dialogue, reconciliation and national unity among young male and female students in Gaza Strip. This aim will be reached by building up the capacities of those students in the required skills as a first step to open a road of dialogue between the two universities. That means that intensive trainings on conflict resolution, management and transformation were conducted as well as on other kind of skills like tolerance, accepting the other and communication. This project aims to enhance the capacities and skills of a democratic dialogue between

the university students, in order to change negative behavior, and promote a culture of a positive one. 25
