WE ARE HERE: BLOGGING FROM GAZA

Blogging is one of the most important phenomena of the new media, and it has spread recently in Gaza Strip among young people. This is especially because it enables young people to reflect their personalities, and because young people want to express their reality on the ground. Through blogging anyone can express what is inside of him or her without restrictions or barriers imposed on his or her writing, which here is only possible through blogging. The importance of that lies in the special situation of Gaza Strip. Young people are living under a total siege that prevents them from leaving Gaza, and from having limited contact to the outside world. Most of the youth has never left Gaza in their whole life. They are shut behind a wall, and also feel like they have no means to talk about their situation, and to exchange ideas and opinions with other young people outside. Also, the current political situation makes it difficult for them to talk freely. All of that creates a deep feeling of helplessness.

So blogging is important for the youth of Gaza because it gives them the opportunity to reflect their views without any restriction, and gives them a space of freedom they normally don’t have. I personally have been blogging for nearly 3 years now. I have benefited a lot fromblogging, it enhanced my writing abilities and expression. So I started to conduct trainings, in which I worked to spread the idea of blogging. In the We are Here project many young people attended the training, showed great interest and worked hard. The result was 20 blogs, among them video blogs, text blogs, photo blogs and audio blogs, representing Gaza’s youth culture, art, and political freedom. Reported by Mohammed Abu Al Komoz, 25, graduated in IT and a blogging trainer.

WE ARE HERE: GAZA YOUTH SPEAKS OUT. With the support of ActionAid, Sharek has implemented a five-month project, We Are Here – Gaza Youth Speak Out” that aims to contribute to the efforts to alleviate the impacts of Israeli restrictions on movement. Through the establishment of virtual communication channels, the youth can express, share and exchange their opinions with their counterparts from all over the globe on issues that are of importance and interest to them. The project's objectives are to enhance and utilize the capacities and skills of the Palestinian youth on media and e-media production and dissemination. The media means focused on is documentary films, in which they can portray their daily life reality. By having several workshops in directing and editing skills, script writing skills, team work, and public relations, the participating youth step by step learns how to produce documentary films. They learn to exchange voices on cultural, socio-economic and political issues and experiences between Palestinian youth and their peers in the outside world.
