Anahata Holistic Healing & Spiritual Center, 945 Central Avenue, Naples / 239-262-0811 Tony Fernandez has been seeing ghosts since he was a child. It

started at age five when the vision of a man who was looking for his wife appeared at the foot of Tony’s bed. Most people, young or old, would probably have screamed with fear, but Tony wanted to help. When he told his mother about the encounter she revealed that a married couple had died in their home many years ago. She asked Tony to let her know when the ghost appeared again because she had information that could help. As promised, when the apparition reappeared, Tony was able to facilitate communication between his mother and the ghost so that vital clues could be passed on. The man and wife were apparently reunited because the spirit was never seen again.

As Tony grew up, church, school and society in general shut down his

avenues to the supernatural realm. That didn’t mean that his gift went away, but barriers were now in place. Without seeming insane, how do you tell someone that a ghost is sitting next to them?! Luckily, many generations of “seers” in his family meant that Tony didn’t have to hide his supernatural abilities at home. As a teenager, he would advise his sister on her boyfriends and the ultimate outcome of their relationship. At the time, she didn’t always like his advice and sometimes ignored it. Today, happily married, she admits that she could have saved herself a lot of dating drama by simply having listened to her brother!

When he was sixteen, Tony became gravely ill with pneumonia. At the

hospital, he was declared dead after his heart stopped beating for almost four minutes. As doctors frantically attached electrodes to his chest, his hold on the land of the living grew faint. A beautiful, white light filled his vision as he naturally gravitated toward its inviting glow. It wasn’t scary yet simply pure, peaceful and full of love. It was only his mother’s tears on his arm that brought him back... and Tony has walked between the two worlds ever since.

Now the in-house psychic at the Anahata Holistic Healing & Spiritua

Center at 945 Central Avenue in Naples, Tony specializes in connecting people with their loved ones from beyond the grave. He also hosts weekly group readings at the Kaw Gallery in the Hibiscus Center. During our meeting, Tony was asked about his sixth sense and he revealed that he can feel the energy of people from the moment they walk through the door. He instantly knows whether they are good or bad by simply looking into their eyes, and can tell if a person has murdered someone or has the capability to do so. About five years ago, Tony had an “awakening.” It started with certain symptoms that he explains as “my natural ability needing to be utilized,” and culminated with a chance meeting with prominent Boston medium, Nancy Garber, who was very impressed by his natural abilities and encouraged him to use his gift as a means of service to others.

Tony’s calling brings him a lot of fulfillment, but it is not always easy. It’s

sixth sense trying to send you a message. Don’t ignore it!” And I certainly won’t... not anymore!

always very emotional when he succeeds in reuniting an individual with a loved one who they thought was lost forever. If he doesn’t clear himself after each channeling, the intense emotions stay with him. He counsels people and helps them to move forward with life and through the grieving process. “It’s not an ongoing dialogue,” he clarifies, cautioning that less than scrupulous “psychics” will make up information to keep people coming back and spending money. “It must be addictive though,” I comment, “to suddenly have that connection again with someone you loved deeply and who is now deceased.” “It can be,” says Tony, “and sometimes I have to tell people that I can’t do anything more for them. They need to take comfort in the fact that their loved one is still with them, watching over them. It’s all about energy. We need to understand that each one of us is an eternal spirit living a human experience.” “Do you believe in reincarnation?” I ask. “Absolutely,” Tony responds with confidence. “Furthermore, we all have some level of psychic ability. It’s just called ‘woman’s intuition’ or your ‘gut feeling’. That is your personal

I’ve long been interested in psychics and their alleged abilities to see the future, but you couldn’t

exactly call me a believer. My one legit reading ten years ago, which was surprisingly dead on, was overshadowed by a healthy dose of skepticism after many other pseudo “readings” and countless 1-800-PSYCHIC commercials. My initial thought for the Halloween issue of Pulse Magazine was to go undercover for a true exposé on psychics in our area. I expected the feature to be a humorous look at the “all-seeing” individuals in SWFL, with the added bonus of a few tarot card readings for myself and Pulse Magazine writer, Brooke Herron, but that’s not exactly how it turned out! Instead, Brooke and I were impressed, intrigued and mildly disturbed by the accuracy of

our readings. Rather than the rather hokey stereotypical image of an old woman hovering over a crystal ball, we visited psychics operating out of remarkably normal homes, or storefronts. These psychics were friendly and engaging; and the covert operation turned into mostly open interviews as our curiosity about these individuals and their sixth sense seemed far more interesting than rehashing our readings and trying to find the scam within. Have I become a believer? Let’s just say that I now have a lot more respect for the authenticity of “the gift”! - Pam Lazarto
