FROM THE STYLIST I have naturally curly hair and have been thinking about

straightening it. I know there are a lot of choices out there today, but also a lot of conflicting opinions. What are your thoughts on Brazilian straighteners versus Japanese straighteners? By the way, I color my hair but do not have any highlights. - Kathy

WOW! That's a great question, Kathy. Let’s start with Japanese

straighteners. First you must understand that a Japanese straight- ener is nothing more than an ammonium thioglycolate product, or as we call it, a thio straightener. You are altering the chemical bonds of the hair when a thio product is used. First the bonds are broken down and then you re-shape them.

In re-shaping the

bonds, you have a choice on how straight you want the hair to be. Once you achieve the desired degree of straightness, then you re- harden the bonds. That is done when the hair is neutralized. The reason I state “desired degree of straightness” is because there are products now that will just eliminate frizz and leave curl, like Rusk Anti-Curl with Keri-Shine. That leaves us with the Brazilian Keratin Treatments... and

rumors, rumors, rumors! Are they a health hazard? I guess the answer to that question is very questionable itself. I will say this - there are several products in our life that contain formaldehyde. The FDA states that any solution containing more than .02% of formaldehyde is patently unsafe.

There are products out there

that say they are formaldehyde free. They usually will contain aldehyde. This is where things get a bit unclear about chemical hair straighteners. Is there a difference between the two? Is alde- hyde unsafe? Think of it like this - we have been chemically altering bonds in the hair for years, i.e. perms. Coating the hair to achieve results similar to chemical alteration is still a comparatively new treat- ment that has a continuing debate regarding its safety. I hope this helps! Thanks for writing.
