Don’t Miss the Opportunity to Talk
T
he MoD has been working with the Financial Services Authority (FSA) to bring a programme of financial education to all serving personnel and their families.
With the support of the Chief of the Defence Staff, that programme is now well underway and to-date over 4,500 Service personnel have attended a financial briefing by the FSA. The briefings are designed to cover: mortgages, savings, pensions, investments as well as everyday issues including: making ends meet, budgeting, shopping around and planning ahead. The FSA are aiming to make their financial education briefing and materials available to all serving personnel by 2011.
Results show that 86% of people attending say their understanding of money matters has improved, 80% intend to take positive action relating to their personal finances and 93% intend to use FSA resources.
One Squadron Leader said: “I found the briefing useful, practical and provided sound advice from an
impartial finance expert. The delivery and content of the presentation would certainly benefit all Service personnel and their families.”
An Army Major said: “I’m going to find out more about my pension and MoD benefits. I wasn’t aware I could reclaim my legal expenses so I’m going to do that!”
A RAF Sergeant said: “Generic and relevant. I’m going to check my pension”.
An Army Captain said: “Refreshing that you are not selling and the troops appreciate that very much” .
The ambition is to include a financial education module in initial and/or further training courses for all Service personnel so that everyone can benefit from the initiative and the RAF is piloting a new service designed to provide personalised guidance on money matters to help people face up to their financial issues.
