Stig’s Cousins Assist in the Recruiting Campaign

T

he recruiters tell us RAF Recruiting is going from strength to strength and it’s

not all because of the economic downturn.

The achievement of last year’s massive recruiting drive has seen 4,559 new recruits join the RAF and 436 into the RAF Reserves. This year’s target is 4,557 for Regulars and 450 for Reserves.

Don’t Bank on the Economy Relying on the recession to provide the right number and quality of applicants would be to misunderstand the employment market and forget the lessons of the last 20 years. However, the recruiters aren’t ignoring the skills that are now available, whether joining the Regulars or Reserves. In addition to adverts in job

centres, recruiters are approaching local industries that declare redundancies.

Maintaining the Balance

Retention is, of course, an important part of the manning equation and much is being done in this area too. Whilst the current climate has a short-term impact on recruitment and retention, the need for a sustained, consistent and coherent recruiting campaign is understood.

Marketing In the last six months, the recruiting marketing team have been working closely with the media and marketing industry to ensure that the RAF has the very best value marketing campaign. With the media industry slowing down at present, there have been some excellent deals arranged with creative agencies and TV advertising.

Take Pride in Your Stride But it’s not just down to marketing – the need for people to be seen in uniform day-to-day also helps raise awareness. At a time when the Country is showing increasing support for the Armed Forces, those in RAF uniform, regulars, reserves and cadets, can wear the uniform with pride. Equally importantly, our families can share in that pride, as can the veterans who have built our 91 year history.
