• Initiatives by the private sector to tap into the ‘talent pool’ of military family members. Early thoughts include private companies placing employment opportunities on larger units and trialling training/work placements aimed at those aged 16+.
• Work by the Cabinet Office to consider enhancing transfers for partners employed as Civil Servants.
• Evaluation of Tax Credits to see if they can support military partners who wish to work. (We were asked to provide evidence regarding the costs of childcare as part of this work).

Our Evidence- Gathering Focus for 2010
T
his year sees a new chapter in our plans for evidence gathering
workshops on family-related subjects. We wish to hone in on subjects close to your hearts and which are also becoming ‘hot topics’ in the corridors of power. Our focus will be:

Future housing aspirations. Would you prefer to receive financial help buying your own home or a housing allowance rather than living in quarters, Mess or Barrack Block? Or should more money be poured into upgrading the quarters because it is the best way to support mobile Service life?
Pay and Allowances. Where do you stand on the level of pay and allowances to which you are entitled? Are there anomalies in the entitlements? Is debt an issue for you and if so, what’s causing it?
Operational Tempo. How is the current high level of operations impacting on family life? Is support to the families of those deployed sufficient? What if you live ‘beyond the wire’?
Childcare. We are not just interested here in provision, but the hours, the cost, the accessibility, the restrictions and other issues you may face.
Employment and Training Opportunities for Family Members. There is a huge amount of talent amongst adults living in the military community (including grown up kids!) but is it being realised? What are the barriers

to employment and training? How can the Government and MoD better support those who wish to work?
Definition of a RAF family in 2010. The traditional family unit of a married heterosexual couple with 2.4 children is no more prevalent within the RAF than it is outside, yet MoD policy continues to evolve at a snail’s pace. Is it time for the MoD to modernise its definition of family and if so how? We are looking to scope the challenges confronting lone parents, those divorced with children, unmarried partners and ‘blended’ families.
The Emerging Plan Details of unit visits will be placed on the website and posters will appear. Please look out for our workshops, your views will be collected anonymously using a keypad voting system and if you would like to say more, then you may do so either in open forum or privately with a member of the Federation team.
