Question 22 Mathematically similar means that the two shapes are in the same proportion to each other. For example, if one side is doubled then all the sides are doubled. First find two sides that correspond to each other.

a) the two corresponding sides are 10 (BC) and 15 (QR). We are going from the smaller shape to the larger so we want 



PQ = 6 x   = 9 cm

b) the two corresponding sides are 10 (BC) and 15 (QR). We are going from the larger shape to the smaller so we want 



AD = 12 x   = 8 cm

Question 23 As we have a right angled triangle we can use basic trigonometry. Start by labelling the sides from the point of view of the angle we have (or are trying to get)

hyp opp 10.6 adj

8.2 x

If we write SOHCAHTOA. We are not using OPP so if we strike through O we get SOHCAHTOA we are left with CAH

cos x = 

take inverse cos (cos-1) of both sides x = cos-1 (0.77358…) = 39.3⁰ (to 3 significant figures)

 = . . = 0.77358…
