INDULGENCES mixology by brad hart
The Gaslamp has nothing on this hip and trendy award-winning University Heights hot spot. Lei Lounge opened its doors a few years back and it didn’t take long for it to become one of the city’s most popular hangouts, not only for the LGBT com- munity, but for anyone seeking sanctuary somewhere a little more exotic. A big part of the Lei Lounge appeal is its vast selection of signature cocktails, which after 5:00 p.m. on Sundays can be enjoyed for only $4 each. Serving up those delicious drinks is a fun and friendly troupe of mixologists—one of whom,Tom Sawyer, let us in on a few of his favorite things and why he thinks Lei Lounge is all the rage.
The Rage Monthly: So where were you born and raised, Tom? Tom Sawyer: I was born up in Glendale, California.
Rage: And how long have you here in San Diego? TS: I’ve been in San Diego for four years now.
Rage: What is it you like most about living in our fine city? TS: It would have to be the great weather.
Rage: How long have you been bartending at Lei Lounge? TS: The past three years. Currently I work every Friday through Monday night.
Rage: What is it that you enjoy most about your work? TS: I would have to say it’s the interactions with the customers and the great con- versations we have.
Rage: What kind of atmosphere can one expect to find at Lei Lounge? TS: Lei Lounge is very fun and friendly but also has a laid back vibe.
Rage: What are some of your favorite nights or events at Lei Lounge? TS: Sunday Brunch/Remedy is always a good time with a great mix of people.
Rage: Lei Lounge has quite an extensive and creative “signature cocktail” list. What are some of the more popular choices? TS: The Pomegranate Martini is very popular with the Lei Lounge crowd, as is the Aloe Vera Collins.
Rage: Do you have a “specialty drink” of your own that you have created? TS: Yes, it’s called the Pacific Sky. Be sure to stop by the bar and try one. You’ll love it!
Rage: Can you tell us one of the funniest things you’ve ever scene from behind the bar? TS: Wow…there has been so much, I don’t even know where to start.
Rage: What are some of your favorite things to do when you’re not bartending? TS: Well, my most favorite thing to do during my downtime is just hang out with my children.
Rage: What one word do you think your friends would choose to describe you? TS: Loveable
Rage: Tell us something about yourself that not many people may know. TS: One thing I don’t think many people know is that I have two sons. Andy is 7 and Nick, my youngest, is 3.
Rage: Finally, for those who may not have been to Lei Lounge yet, what would you say they have been missing? TS: A lot! Lei Lounge is always a cool, hip experience in a beautiful open environ- ment. Oh, and strong cocktails!
