INDULGENCES outrageous by daisy torres August was a roller coaster of a month filled with amazing events, some of which
I’m not allowed to discuss in a respectable magazine like this one. It also offered some great opportunities to celebrate and party before kids and college students get ready for another school year. Here are some of the events I attended last month. Hillcrest CityFest 2010 was an amazing event this year, expanding beyond 5th
avenue and onto University avenue in the heart of Hillcrest. My amiga Jessica and I put on some sensible shoes and walked about as we enjoyed some lemonade and had our fill of some amazing food. The entertainment was also top notch for a local event. One of the things I like about CityFest is the mix of gay and straight folks having a good time and enjoying a Sunday out and about. . However, my favorite CityFest moment was when I discovered that my favorite place for baked goodies now serves my favorite adult beverages. That’s right, Babycakes now includes a full bar and handsome bar- tender Christopher is on hand to fix you a cocktail. It just goes to show you that it’s possible to have your cake and drink up too! Now, if they would just put a small cot in the corner somewhere, I would never have to leave the place. Friday August 13, I at- tended the live cast demonstration by artist Dennis Covey, featuring the sexy model, Matt, at House.Boi. I found it fascinating and sexy and the crowd really seemed to have fun learning about the process that goes into each of Dennis Covey’s creations. The next day, I headed to Orange County to celebrate Pride at the Irvine Hidden Valley. I had the opportunity to meet many of our O.C. readers and I was able to watch our O.C./L.A. social columnist Jizzona Straynger and my friend Sparkle Stone perform on stage. Orange County Pride may not be as big of a Pride event as San Diego, Los Angeles or Long Beach, but I predict that it won’t be long before it gets there. Next up, on August 19th, I went to see Hello Dolly on opening night at the Starlight
Musical Theater in Balboa Park. It was a wonderful time because it is one of my favorite shows at one of my favorite venues. I’m always impressed by the quality of the actors and their ability to think on their feet and be ready to hit the “pause button” whenever a plane flies overhead. That’s talent! One of my favorite events of the month was the grand unveiling of Bourbon Street
Bar and Grill, a new addition to the Bourbon Street family. For those of you who haven’t seen it yet, they have added a restaurant in the room where the pool tables used to be. I love the menu and the food was delicious, so I think it’s going to be a great place to grab a bite to eat and have some drinks throughout the week. The last big event I attended was the 35th Annual Nicky Awards honoring the best in our community. I always like to get all pretty and mingle with the folks in the com- munity. Congratulations to all the winners, including The Rage Monthly’s very own Jay Jones for Outstanding Businessman. To all the nominees as well because ultimately, it is an honor just to be nominated by the community. September promises to be a great month for social events, so plan accordingly. If you’re looking to rope yourself a cowboy, the San Diego Rodeo is coming to town

September 9 – 12, so it’s time to dust off your chaps and cowboy boots and practice your lasso skills. Maybe this will be the year I find my cowboy to ride with into the sun- set. If Wrangler butts drive YOU nuts, check out
sandiegorodeo.org for a full schedule of events and ticket information. Later in the month, unless those cowboy boots “are made for walkin” it’s time to trade in them in for some athletic shoes because AIDS Walk takes place September 26, so either walk or support a team with a pledge of support. For more information, check out
aidswalk.org. My favorite comedian, Margaret Cho, is back in town with a brand new stand up/ musical tour. This is a new mix of stand up and music, Cho style, that is not to be missed. The concert is presented by Humphrey’s Concerts By the Bay on September 24. You can purchase tickets today at
humphreysconcerts.com. I’m sure tickets will go fast, so get them while you can. I’m out of space and out of time for this month, so it’s time to sign off, but you can find out about more upcoming events by checking out our calendar of events on page 74. Adios and I will see you next month!
