For my comment this month, I’m going to unashamedly give a plug to the Aero Engineering/Composites Engineering show taking place at the NEC Birmingham from 29-30 September 2010.

Apart from the fact that the co-hosted events will be of significant interest to any company actively involved in the two sectors, I would like to bring to everyone’s attention that as part of Aero Engineering’s ‘Open Technology Forums’ Solutions will be hosting a presentation made by tooling specialist Unimerco entitled: ‘The economic benefits of custom-designed tooling’.

Having met with Unimerco’s managing director Nigel Souster on a number of occasions it’s plain to see that the company’s approach to business is somewhat different from the norm. Yes, it does offer a wide range of high quality standard and customised tooling and its Re·New service claims to restore worn tools to ‘better than new’ condition, but Unimerco’s entire business model is centred around saving its customers money so there’s less emphasis on products and more on productivity and optimisation. Nigel firmly believes that companies in general don’t put enough importance on tooling and how it can impact profit margins. He advocates that for companies with the right profile, Unimerco can make minimum cost savings of 30% a reality and he’s even prepared to carry out initial trials free of charge to prove it! Unimerco has many clients in the aerospace sector so this presentation will be of particular interest to audiences at Aero Engineering 2010. Pop along and take a look. It will take place on Wednesday 29th September 2010 from 12.10pm through to 12.50pm and we’ll be running a question and answer session afterwards.

The presentation forms part of a wider programme taking place on both days of the shows where a number of top quality guest speakers will be discussing all the hot topics of the day. Full details are available at www.aeroconf.com and www.compositesexhibition.com.
