IMTS 2010 aims to inspire

As the summer draws to a close, the American manufacturing industry will be looking towards the biannual International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS), which takes place in Chicago from 13-18 September, to gauge how the market is recovering in 2010. Taking pride of place as the largest exhibition of its kind in North America, this year’s IMTS will be the 28th

edition in its current

format, this time around accommodating more than 1,100 exhibitors over 1.2 million square feet throughout four halls of the McCormick Place complex.

Having welcomed 92,450 buyers and sellers from over 116 countries in 2008, the organisers will be hoping to achieve at least the same this time around and in doing so have arranged a number of attractions in addition to the established Industry & Technology Conference programme.

New for 2010, an Industry Inspiration Day will take place on the opening day, designed to bring the industry together under one roof to discuss new opportunities, network and explore innovative ways of overcoming challenges. “IMTS attendees repeatedly tell us that they come to the show to learn, to network and to find new resources and innovative manufacturing technology resources,” explained John Krisko, IMTS director of exhibitions. “We are committing significant energy and resources to make the conference the premier educational offering available to the manufacturing industry.” Keynote speakers at the Industry Appreciation Day will represent all the key industries and include Airbus Americas’ CEO, Allan McArtor; Ford Motor Company’s vice-president of North American manufacturing, Jim Tetreault; the American Wind Energy Association’s CEO, Denise Bode; and the Emergo Group’s CEO, Rene van de Zande.

Also featuring at the show in the North Hall will be the Emerging

Technology Centre (ETC), presented by the Association for Manufacturing Technology in partnership with the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. The ETC's theme for 2010 is ‘knowledge- based’, and will cover all aspects of business such as manufacturing, people, business and technology. At the core however is a showcase of some of the most recent and innovative technological developments in the manufacturing industry, this year featuring additive manufacturing, cloud computing, the open manufacturing systems standard MTConnect and nanotechnology/micro manufacturing. These will be demonstrated through 3D virtual reality presentations, with experts providing hands-on experiences.

Elsewhere, Rolls-Royce, in partnership with the University of Sheffield’s AMRC will be hosting an Advanced Manufacturing Centre in the West Hall, with its own interactive 3D presentation of a Trent 1000 engine, which powers the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The exhibit will also feature fan blades and other components from the Trent 900 engine and a variety of presentations on the key technologies that go into the manufacturer’s latest designs,

exploring the trends and technologies being adopted by the leading manufacturers. The West Hall will also play host to two more examples of cutting edge engineering, with Lockheed Martin exhibiting a full scale model of its F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter and Tesla exhibiting its high performance Roadster electric sports car. Furthermore, a museum of manufacturing technology on loan from the American Precision Museum as well as from exhibitors will be located in the East Hall, designed to demonstrate just how far technology has developed over the years.

Completing the line-up of attractions, the IMTS Industry & Technology Conference will be running

between 13-17 September, covering a wide range of subjects within materials engineering, machining technology and trends, alternative manufacturing processes, metrology and plant operations. Those interested in attending can view a full line-up and register on the website.
