Checking for Charity plows its way into the SkateZone

By ROBERT LINNEHAN The Voorhees Sun

Want to raise more money for

your charity? Better make sure you score

that game winning goal or throw up a hat trick at the Second Annu- al Checking for Charity. The an- nual ice hockey tournament will feature 16 teams vying for a large chunk of money that will be do- nated to charity at the end of the event. The tournament will be held

from Friday, Aug. 20 to Aug. 22 at the Flyers Skate Zone in the town- ship. It’s a free event open to the public.

Last year, officials said over $9,000 was raised for local chari- ties. Checking for Charity is a local IRS 501c iii organization that raises money for a variety of charities. “The theme for this year’s

weekend is ‘Play, Cheer and Party.’ This theme broadens the spectrum of those looking to get

involved with the Checking for Charity events,” said Marissa Malts, head of Public Relations for Checking for Charity. “Play in the tournament. If you can’t play, cheer on your favorite player or team and party with everyone at the Beef ‘n Beer.” Each team has already an- nounced which charity it will play for at the tournament, Malts said. Each team pays an entrance fee and the top teams in the tour- nament receive a larger chunk of the money for their charity. All teams that participate will get money for their charity, Malts said, but the winner will receive much more than the last place participant. The brainchild of local Sunday

morning pickup hockey player Matt Bader, the tournament in- vites some serious talent to par- ticipate. A team is actually com- ing all the way from North Caroli- na to play, Malts said, and several athletes have played with the Philadelphia Phantoms and even

the NHL. Players range from everyday

Sunday men’s hockey players, she said, to players like former Philadelphia Phantom Dave MacIsaac, who now coaches the AHL Louisiana Ice Gators. Re- cent Flyers draft pick Nick Luuko will also play on a team in the tournament. Luuko, a defenseman, was se- lected in the sixth round of the 2010 NHL draft. He is the son of Comcast-Spectacor President Peter Luuko. “We have a nice mix of players in this tournament,” Malts said. “Athletes from the AHL and NHL play right there with the guys who are just actively competitive throughout the year.”
