Weaverville ‘Compact Discoveries picks up West Coast affiliate San Francisco NPR public ra-
dio station KALW-FM, 91.7 will broadcast ”Compact Discoveries” on a weekly basis, the first station in California to do so. Simultane- ously the program will stream on the station’s Web site
kalw.org. Producer and host Fred Flax-
man is delighted with this impor- tant addition to the list of stations carrying the program. Te Weav- erville resident said, “I’m particu- larly thrilled to have the programs broadcast in San Francisco, so the people in my favorite large Ameri- can city can also enjoy the music selections and themes. After all, San Francisco is the Asheville of the West.” Te show began in 2002 and is
now carried on more than 160 sta- tions across the world.
Retirement Goals
by Michael Creasman, CFP
According to a
recent survey of an affluent group of investors with at least $250,000 to invest, the
Great Recession has left some lasting impressions. More than half of those surveyed say they wished they had focused more on “life goals” than “the numbers.” Specifically, 38 percent wished they had given more thought to how they wanted to live in retirement, and 23 percent said that they wished they had worked with a financial adviser earlier. Eighteen percent were troubled that they hadn’t let go of more luxuries in order to reach their retirement goals. Te best advice they could give those who were 10-15 years from retire- ment was to “build a plan around what is most important to you.”
HINT: Te second most popular
bit of advice that those participating in the above-mentioned survey had for near-retirees was to pay down debt ahead of time.
Money is vital to a pleasant retire-
ment. Te recession of 2007-2009 made many people appreciate the benefits of receiving professional fi- nancial guidance. of a U.S. women’s biking team that set a world record in the team-pur- suit 3K race at the Pan American Championships in May in Aguas- calientes, Mexico. Te mark of 3:19.569 bested the
record by nearly two seconds. “We were the first women’s team
to break the 3:20 mark. We were able to raise the bar,” she said. “It’s something we will always have.” Tamayo’s team nearly bested the
previous world mark of 3:21.30, set by a New Zealand team in March, during a qualifying run for the Pan Am games, coming within three- hundreths of a second. “We knew going into the race
it was possible to set the world re- cord,” she said. Te U.S. beat Cuba in the race to capture gold. Te team-pursuit 3K race is 12
laps around a 250-meter velodrome track. Te Pan Am track was wood- en. Te time is based on the time of the last rider across the finish line, and two teams race against one other squad based on the strength of their qualifying times.
Tamayo and her other team
members, Sarah Hammer and Dotsie Bausch, had been practicing together since October of last year. It was announced late last year the team-pursuit 3K race would be an Olympic event at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. As a member of the U.S. cycling
team who rides for Peanut Butter & Co. Twenty 12, she hopes to com- pete with her team in 2012. Right now, she is soaking in her
team’s achievement. “It’s a surreal feeling,” she said. Tamayo, a Pennsylvania native
who moved to the area five years ago, has been racing competitively for 10 years, spending the past few dedicated to road racing. However, after several years away, she re- turned to track racing last year and is motivated by her team’s chance to qualify for the Olympics. “It’s something real tangible for
me to go after,” she said. Tamayo enjoys riding locally
and competed and won the Town Mountain Hill Climb Time Trial in late May in Asheville.
