due the annexation of several Wood- land Hills areas that will take effect July 1, part of this year’s budget in- crease is due to services the town will have to provide to the more than 600 new town citizens. Weaverville police is proposed

to add one officer and new vehicle, rather than two, this fiscal year to accommodate for the additional patrol area. Te council held a brief closed session during a budget work- shop Tursday (May 6) to further discuss this matter. Other big-ticket items likely to
hold in 2010-2011 are an estimated $617,000 in road repairs in the an- nexed area, a new garbage truck and three new fire fighters. Weaverville Fire Chief Jeff Hoop-

er said the department needs addi- tional personnel to not only ensure the ladder truck, purchased last year, remains in full service, but also to man a planned substation on Reems Creek Road. Te town bought more than four acres earlier this year for $260,000, using funds acquired by last fall’s sale of the old fire station. “We don’t have the manpower to
service that substation right now,” Hooper said. Also proposed to be withheld from this year’s budget are typical cost of
living increases for town employ- ees. A 2 percent buffer of $75,042 is included that may be dispersed in January 2011 depending on results from a market salary survey the town has enlisted. New state mandates will increase
the town’s retirement compensation for its employees by $46,500.
In addition to the tax rate, water
rates will also likely increase. Tey would bump up by 5 percent for the second consecutive year, although the recycling fee is scheduled to be dropped. Morgan said dropping the recycling fee will save taxpayers about $68,000 or roughly one cent on the tax rate.
Search for Morgan’s successor Following Weaverville Town Manager Mike Morgan’s announce-
ment that he will retire before the end of this year, Weaverville town officials are discussing how to locate his successor. Town council will consider enlisting search firms before making a
finalized decision on how to properly move forward. It is believed that the new town manager will be hired and work in conjunction with Morgan for several months before Morgan retires.
What about Fourth of July?
By Matt Tate Where does the Fourth of July
factor in to this year’s budget? Facing a budget crisis last year,
the town cancelled its Fourth of July celebration, saving the town more than $30,000.
Community yard and craft sale North Buncombe Elementary School will be holding its first an-
nual community yard and craft sale from 8 am to 1 pm on Satruday (May 15) in the bus parking lot at the school. Donated items may be dropped off Tursday (May 13) and Friday (May 14). Proceeds to go toward the school’s playground fund. Call Jen Anderhalden at 645- 5544 or Allyson Sineath at 484-8077 for more information.
Of the $25,000 budgeted for
community celebrations in 2009- 2010, roughly $15,000 remain. Mayor Al Root and Vice Mayor
Dottie Sherrill have discussed sev- eral low-budget Fourth of July al- ternatives, including a July 3 cel- ebration considering July 4 falls on a Sunday this year.
