in the North Buncombe communi- ty, New Life Community Church is certainly making a tremendous impact on the lives of people for generations to come. Over its exciting 13-year history,

New Life Community has assem- bled in four locations. Te church met at Jones Primary School for five years before moving into its current worship facility on Riverside Drive in November 2004. Pastor Steve Harris and his wife

Ann first began New Life Com- munity in 1997. Harris was in his fifth year as the associate pastor at Bent Creek Baptist Church when he answered God’s call to begin a church in the Asheville area. Prior to ministry at Bent Creek, Harris spent his first four years of ministry serving as a senior pastor in More- head City. He was then an associ- ate pastor in California for another six years. Harris is originally from Asheville and returned to the area in 1992. NLCC is very intentional about

living out its mission “to build mul- tiplying disciples of Christ by loving God in worship, growing together in discipleship and serving others in ministry.” One direct focus of

this mission is church planting. NLCC has already helped launch over 100 new churches around the globe. “Planting churches is one of our core values,” Harris explained. “We began New Life as a ‘20/20 mission’ based out of Acts 20:20. We are committed to helping sponsor new churches and train up pastors to evangelize and disciple Christian believers.” NLCC has helped plant regional churches such as Te Cove Church in Moores- ville. International plants include churches in Honduras and India, as well as concentrated efforts in ministry to the Quechua Indians of Peru. World mission support is a high priority, with numerous church members participating in short-term mission trips each year as well. In keeping with its mission, lo-

cal outreach is a central part of NLCC. Ministry groups volunteer with ABCCM and at the Veteran’s Restoration Quarters on a regular basis. Other outreach efforts in- clude quarterly “Canning Hunger” food drives, “Beautiful Day” and “River Link” service projects, and “Apartment Life” evangelism ef- forts. New Life hosts ESL classes (English as a Second Language) every Wednesday night for com- munity members. Beginning this

month, the church is also offering a new “Set Free” ministry to help those battling strongholds and ad- dictions. NLCC provides many worship

and discipleship opportunities as well. New Life Community is a Southern Baptist affiliate offering a contemporary style of worship at 10am on Sunday. A variety of adult, youth and children’s minis- tries are offered including AWAN- NA, Life Groups and Bible studies for all ages. Amidst the countless obligations

and distractions of our daily lives, Harris was quick to share what he finds most important to remem- ber. “In Mark 12, we are given the greatest commandment to love God with our heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves,” he said. “All of life can be summed up in love; love for God and love for people.

It is

so important that we remember to reach up to God and then reach out and into the hearts of others.” He continued, “So often we look for love in other places and lose sight of our original purpose! God created us to love Him and to love others. Nothing else matters!” For more information about the
