Spiritual Awakenings
Enlightened Parenting through Astrology
by Donna Heath P
arents who want to do the best for their children continually search for useful and practical
ways to upgrade their parenting skills. A growing number of parents are turn- ing to astrology to enhance the parent- child relationship. Astrology can provide amazing insights into a child’s personality, learning styles, gifts, and challenges. To paraphrase the great psychologist Carl Jung, anything born at a particular moment in time embod- ies the energies of the universe at that time. These energies, revealed in natal charts and based on a person's birth data, represent patterns of thinking, feel- ing and behavior that can be interpreted through the language of astrology. When focusing on a particular
parent/child relationship, for example, an astrologer will collect the birth data for both the child and the parent and then cast two individual charts. The astrologer analyzes the child’s chart first, looking for major characteristics and tendencies of personality: creativ- ity, learning and communication style, response to discipline, peer and family
interaction, etc. Next, the astrologer creates a “combined chart” in order to get an overview of the interaction and relationship between the parent and child. During the consult session, the astrologer describes the child’s chart to the parent and shares some ideas that might help enhance their relation- ship. The parent may express concerns or questions about the child. Then the astrologer explains the combined parent-child chart, showing how their energies interact so the parent can gain some insight into better ways of approaching discipline, communica- tion, learning, etc. Once parents un- derstand their children in this unique way they are able to nurture them in positive ways. They may even discover a new talent or hobby that suits the child. The consult session also helps parents realize more deeply that be- cause each child is different he or she will interact with siblings and parents differently. In a family, each child ben- efits from a personalized approach. For example, one mom dis-
covered that she was relating to her
seven-year-old son in a very matter- of-fact way. She believed that she was being the “best“ mom she could by attending all his events, coaching his team, spending time at his school, etc. Yet, at home he was acting out, being restless and contrary. After the astrology consult, she understood his behavior better: she realized that par- ticipation in his events, while impor- tant, was not what he needed to feel secure and nurtured. The mom’s chart revealed that she had a lot of organi- zational ability and an active, practi- cal, can-do attitude. However, her son’s chart showed that he tended to be much more feeling-based, and had a strong need for acceptance and nur- turing. By adjusting her behavior and schedule, by giving him more “down time” with her, by listening to his feelings each evening, the son calmed down and his behavior improved. The combined parent-child chart can also help parents navigate the of- ten tumultuous period of adolescence during which peer pressure, physical and emotional changes, and academic and social demands affect teens ap- proaching young adulthood. Parents have discovered that just as they schedule regular medical check-ups for their children, they can enhance their parent-child relationship with regular astrological updates.
