Newport resort owner slams local authority Sir Terry Matthews, the owner


of the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, South Wales, has revealed that he will no longer invest in the city after councillors rejected plans to relocate a listed farmhouse. Plans put forward by the resort – due to host the Ryder Cup later this year – would have seen the 17th century Little Bulmore structure moved to a new site but were rejected by Newport City Council's planning committee. Officers had advised committee members to approve plans for the Grade II-listed farmhouse sited near the resort's golf course, although Sir Terry told the BBC that the decision was a "slap in the face".


Work starts on new Hull youth centre Hull City Council (HCC) has


announced the start of construction work on the city's new youth centre, which will replace a former church hall on St George's Road. Network – Young People's Centre will be able to accommodate more than 1,500 young people and will include a café; media and arts spaces; a sports area and an external performance area. Hobson and Porter has been appointed to deliver the Salt Architects-designed venue, which will also provide alternative learning services. Hessle Road Network will manage the facility. More than £1.2m has been raised to cover the cost of the project, with funding sources including the Youth Capital Fund Plus, HCC and Hull Forward, as well as Hull Primary Care Trust and Biffa.

By Pete Hayman Brentwood-based contractor McLaren Construction has been appointed to deliver Tottenham Hotspur Football Club's (THFC) new £45m training facility at Bulls Cross, London. The facility – designed by


KSS Design Group – will be used by the first team and academy squads and will boast a 70m x 50m (230ft x 164ft) indoor artificial pitch. A fitness centre and gym;


changing rooms; medical facilities; a canteen and a hydrotherapy/swimming pool will also form part of the new centre, with McLaren Construc- tion's team now on-site. The centre is situated at the


heart of the Premier League club's new 67-acre (27-hectare) complex, which will also

Severn Trent to offload Vyrnwy By Pete Hayman


A 23,315-acre (9,435-hectare) estate surrounding Lake Vyrnwy in Wales, which incorporates a nature reserve and a number of conservation areas, has been put up for sale. Severn Trent Water is looking


to offload a 125-year lease to one of the largest single blocks of land to be sold in England and Wales in recent years. A guide price of £11m for the


lease has been set by agent Knight Frank, with the sale split into four lots; the largest of which covers a 12,000-acre (4,856-hectare) site farmed jointly with the RSPB.

GHA to design Midlands project


Glenn Howells Architects (GHA) has been chosen to draw up plans for the £11m revamp of Edgbas- ton Priory Tennis Club in Birmingham, following a design competition. Plans are due to be


submitted later this year, which will include a new performance centre, six new indoor courts, a new gym and a revamped clubhouse, as well as a new showcase court. The Lawn Tennis


Association recently committed up to £5m towards the development.
