CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY

ON June 26, Hudson, New York firm Stair Galleries will offer the contents of Dogwood Farm, the Roxbury, Connecticut estate recently sold by producer Douglas S. Cramer and his partner, the artist/writer Hubert S. Bush III.

While Cramer is best known for his contribution to popular television (particularly the 1980s series Dynasty and its spin-off The Colbys), he also ranks among America’s leading collectors. Aided by a number of leading interior designers, Dogwood Farm, a 130-acre

country seat that has received a head-to- toe renovation since Cramer moved east in the late 1990s, epitomised the fashion for combining comfortable traditional furnishings with stimulating contemporary art on the walls. He and Mr Bush are moving to Miami Beach, which has occasioned the sale of a portion of the furnishings that offer many collecting opportunities in a multitude of categories: from mercury glass and tribal artefacts to the English furniture and Near Eastern rugs purchased from London galleries up to 50 years ago.

Many superstars of 20th century art are

represented in the prints being sold: Josef Albers, Jim Dine, David Hockney, Andy Warhol, Ed Rucha, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella, Robert Motherwell, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Rauschenberg and Bridget Riley, whose 1964 screenprint Untitled (Spherical Disk) carries an estimate of $8000-12,000. Of note are the chic garden

appointments including a George III Irish sundial signed for John Margas, Dublin (estimate £2500-5000), and a pair of late 18th-century French carved limestone recumbent lions that once stood sentinel at Cramer’s vineyard ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley (estimate $10,000-20,000). These garden ornaments form an important component to the sale.

Right: Untitled (Spherical Disk), a 2ft 6in x 14in (76 x 35cm) screenprint by Bridget Riley (b. 1931) signed and numbered 5/50 will carry an estimate of $8000-12,000 at the Stair Galleries sale of the contents of Dogwood Farm, Connecticut.
