proaches that help clear out these toxins and hasten recovery. There are also several herbs and nutritional supplements that are active against Lyme and may be used in combination with antibiotics to improve outcomes. Supplements that support im- mune system function are often used in the treatment of Lyme disease.
Protecting Your Family from Lyme
Disease: Create a tick-safe zone
Lyme disease is considered a para-
domestic disease; approximately 75% of people become infected on their family property. Using landscaping techniques to create a tick-safe zone around your home is one way to decrease your risk. Ticks that transmit Lyme disease thrive in humid wooded areas. They die in sunny and dry environments. Here are some simple land- scaping techniques to help reduce tick populations. • Remove leaf litter and clear tall grasses and brush around homes and at the edges of lawns. • Place wood chips or gravel between
lawns and wooded areas to restrict tick migration to recreational areas. • Mow your lawn and clear brush and leaf litter frequently. • Keep swing sets, decks and patios
away from yard edges and trees. For additional protection, you may
want to have your property sprayed to kill ticks. There are systems that combine spraying with bait boxes that place insecti- cides on the mice that are a necessary part of the tick life cycle (and for passing along
Lyme disease). These systems can decrease the total tick population in your property by 97% and percent of infected nymphal ticks to less than two in as little as 2 years.
Keep ticks off of you and your children.
• Use 20-30% DEET on exposed skin and clothing to help prevent tick bites. • Permethrin is another type of repellent;
it can kill ticks. It can be purchased at out- door equipment stores that carry camping or hunting gear. One application to pants, socks, and shoes typically stays effective through several washings. Permethrin should not be applied directly to skin. • Wear long pants, long sleeves, and long socks to keep ticks off children’s skin. Light-colored clothing will help you spot ticks more easily. Tucking pant legs into socks or boots and tucking shirts into pants help keep ticks on the outside of clothing. If someone will be outside for an extended period of time, tape the area where their pants and socks meet to prevent ticks from crawling under their clothes.
Tick checks are key!
Check your child’s body for ticks af-
ter being outdoors, especially in your own yard. Conduct a body check whenever the children come in from outdoors. Search their entire body for ticks. Using a mirror will help you see those hard to see areas. Remove any tick you find. Parents should remember to lead by example and perform tick checks on themselves. Tick checks should be performed dai- ly all year round in Connecticut. As Con-
