horses for my use. I’m really seeing the improvement! Since our return from

CHALLENGES AHEAD

Succeeding in international competition is a constant challenge, Barbara says, because she and her fellow para-equestrians constantly struggle with the costs of their chosen sport. She says she could never compete successfully without the support of her family, adding “they’re my support system and my fan club all rolled into one!” She is also grateful to have received sponsorships from the California Dressage Society and the Challenged Athlete Foundation. Missy concurs with Barbara’s assessment of the financial struggles, saying fundraising is critical, as is getting access to the best horses possible. “The other countries’ para-equestrian teams have some fabulous horses and overall we’re not quite at the same level yet,” she explains. “Money is just a huge issue. I wish I could clone Mibis. I could use ten of her!” WT

B

Apert Understood

arbara’s disability, called Apert Syndrome, is one with which she was born. Characterized by the

premature fusion of certain skull bones, it results in poor joint rotation in all joints, syndactylism (two or more fused joints) in the hands and feet, head and face anomalies caused by bone fusion in the skull and face, and speech impediments. Despite those challenges, she has been riding since

she was 12 years old. After many years of jumping— and the falls that came with her initial discipline, Barbara decided to focus on dressage 15years ago. It offers more safety and gives her the opportunity to compete internationally, she says, which she loves.
