It was every jumper’s nightmare—Elmo had broken a front leg. Since Elmo couldn’t walk out of the arena, the quick

arrival of an equine ambulance was a godsend for Nita and Lucy. “Immediately the veterinarian and HEART’s ambulance came into the arena, and they were able to put a splint on his leg and carefully get him into the ambulance to transport him back to his stall,” reports Nita. “The worst thing is to have this type of tragedy in public where all the spectators are watching. In private back at the stables we were able to deal with the situation.” Once back in Elmo’s stall, they were able to take x-rays

to confirm the unfortunate injury. Sadly, they determined euthanasia was the only option. Over the next few hours they said their good-byes, and HEART was used to transport the gelding to a nearby clinic for the procedure. To have the time and privacy to make these important decisions in a peaceful setting meant a lot to the Blundons. This is one of those times where no one can understand why accidents happen; they just do. It’s taken almost a year for Nita and Lucy to emotionally recuperate
