MARINE

ASSIST

From the Chronicles of Marine Assist BC

There are always a few good lessons and tales to tell at the end of a boating season.

“It was a warm and quiet summer night at Bear Creek Park. Winds were calm. The evening sun had cast a magnificent sky. Now it was time for the four of us to quit the ‘camping experience’ and head downtown by boat for some night action…

It was past midnight when we left the restaurant to head back across the lake, back to our warm sleeping bags. What a night. Great dinner. Good company…

We jumped back aboard. The wind was still calm. The water was crystal clear. We headed out. Farther from shore, the night is black, the mountains and water blend into darkness. From shapes, we knew we were headed in the right direction. Back to the campsite, just West of the point. Getting closer now…

The boat was going great, instruments all lit up, good sound, big wake, dark water. The shapes loomed larger… KaaaaPOWoowwww… going up… everyone pitches forward… KaaaaaBOOooooMMM... going down… HUGE SPLASH… then quiet...

Everyone moves slowly, checking themselves. Everyone seems ok, everyone’s soaked… WOW… The boat’s still floating… WHAT WAS THAT !!!

Then we realise we’ve hit the log booms at 25 miles per hour! We’re stuck inside, No place to go, can’t walk on moving

logs, shores too far away. So, think... It’s past one, we have a “buddy” with a boat, call him, he’ll come, be here in an hour. It was getting colder, we huddled and told stories to keep the dampness off. An hour and a half go by, we hear a boat coming. Shouts! “Buddy’s” here!

We tell our tale. Then carefully shift across the logs between the boats. We hand over bags and purses. Everyone’s accounted for. Then…

"Buddy’s" boat won't start… Everybone’s yelling. Everyone’s upset, the boat won”t start. The batteries dead… can you believe it !!!

Our “buddy” had the Marine Assist card and called 250-808-BOAT at three-thirty in the morning. Marine Assist arrived to find some very cold campers in our boat and to learn “buddy’s” fate. We had cast “buddy” adrift, out there… Waiting their turn for a lesson…
