Welcome To Downtown Kelowna
By Glenn Kohaly
Downtown Kelowna, located on the eastern shore of Okanagan Lake, is in the heart of British Columbia’s beautiful Okanagan Valley. A visit to downtown places you in a spectacular landscape of lake, mountains and parks. You will find an excellent variety of unique shops and boutiques, several sandy beaches, a wide range of cafes, casual to fine dining, heritage buildings to modern architecture, movie theatre to live theatre and art galleries to museums. Designed for the whole family, guided walking tours include interesting anecdotes about the folklore of downtown.
Mosaic Books is the Okanagan Valley’s largest independent bookstore and conveniently located right in the downtown core. They have been a legend with both their new and “bargain” books along with a large selection of magazines, road and lake maps, puzzles and value-priced music since 1968.
Calona Vineyards on the edge of the downtown core has the distinction of being British Columbia’s original winery. In their cozy cellar-like tasting room, you will be able to experience their award winning VQA wines and shop the wine and gift boutique.
Waterfront Park located along Kelowna’s beautiful waterfront is the setting for “Celebrate Canada Day - Kelowna” which is held each July 1st. Live music and other family entertainment, a multicultural food fair, a children’s activity area, multicultural displays, arts & crafts and fireworks at 10:30pm in front of Tug Boat Bay fill the day. Parks Alive! presents numerous music gatherings from approximately June to September each year and many of these are held right in the downtown waterfront area.
A trip to Kelowna would not be complete without taking the time to search for Ogopogo, the legendary lake monster that reputedly resides in Okanagan Lake. The myth dates back to the Interior Salish Native people who exchanged stories of a lake creature over 100 years ago. Purported sightings over the years continue to strengthen the legend. To “see” Ogopogo for yourself, be sure to visit the statue of the creature found along the downtown waterfront.
If you enjoy being in or on the water you may never want to leave Kelowna. Spend an exciting afternoon parasailing. Yes, you can fly single or tandem! Gather the family or a few friends and rent a houseboat for the weekend or for a unique dining experience, try an unforgettable cruise on Okanagan Lake onboard a luxurious houseboat leaving right from the downtown dock on a regular schedule. They offer dinner and entertainment cruises. Come downtown and experience the heart of the city for yourself! Everything is Waiting For You! ◊
