Fintry is a great get-away for camping or a day trip. Lots of hiking and sandy beaches await you. If you love to dive, you’ll love this area as there is a sunken barge offshore of the park. There are no lifeguards on duty at provincial parks; however, the natural sand beach and warm water makes this part of Lake Okanagan ideal for taking a dip. It’s also a great place to water ski and there is a boat launch and mooring buoys at each end of the beach.

It is just past Fintry where the lake branches off into two large bays; one ending by Beachcomber Bay, Kin Beach and Lakeshore Road in Vernon. The other arm of Okanagan Lake separates Westside Road from Vernon’s Adventure Bay neighbourhood and ends at Willow Shore Road and Head of the Lake Road in Spallumcheen.

There are many small bays and trails that lead down to the lake along the east side of the lake. Make sure you know how deep the water is before you beach yourself here.

At the approximate centre of the lake, across the bridge, down Highway 97 you will find the largest of the three cities located on Lake Okanagan. Kelowna is a thriving city filled with

The Kelowna Marina is located on the lake in City Park, right next to the Fintry Queen, by the famous “Sails” sculpture. They have lots of toys and boats for rent as does the marina at the Delta Grand Hotel. There are also dry storage/concierge companies here that will put your boat in the water

things to do from bird watching to live theatre to hiking, mountain biking, golfing and of course, water sports!

Whether you’ve brought your own boat or are renting, this area of Lake Okanagan is a boater’s paradise. As long as you recognize that this paradise has a lack of places to moor your boat overnight. There are mooring buoys up and down the lake; however, it is best not to assume anything and reserve a spot at one of the marinas.

when you need it and take it out and put it in storage when you are done.

Located just outside the city centre is the Hotel Eldorado, a Kelowna landmark. As with most marinas in the area boats are available for rent. They have a full service marina complete with fueling station and you can moor your boat here for a reasonable fee. The restaurant at the Eldorado is a local favourite, especially for their Sunday brunch.

Fishing on Lake Okanagan isn’t quite what it used to be; however, the lake is well-suited to trolling and can yield large rainbow trout. You will, of course, have to keep clear of the power boaters and water skiers in the area. Heading north or south from Kelowna will get you into some nice fishing waters. Make sure you have your fishing license and check to see how many and what you are allowed to catch.

Whether you are catching fish or catching rays, there’s no doubt about it, Lake Okanagan is the perfect place to do it. ◊
