RESPONSIBLE LUXURY
Is it possible to deliver a genuinely green hotel without compromising on guest comfort? Oliver Ephgrave looks at a
recently opened property in Bangalore that claims to have the answer
It’s no mean feat to achieve the highest level of LEED certification, yet a development in Bangalore recently became the world’s largest hotel to be awarded Platinum status. What’s more, the operators of the 282-room property believe that the hotel is so opulent that it deserves a Burj Al Arab-esque ‘seven star’ rating. The Gardenia’s operator ITC is an Indian luxury hotel brand which is quickly becoming a
torch bearer for sustainable operation. Anand Rao, the hotel’s area manager and general manager, explains: “Part of ITC’s philosophy is responsibility towards the environment. Around three-and-a-half years ago, ITC decided to not just practice green initiatives but to create a green hotel. Bangalore was seen as a very appropriate destination as it is renowned as the city of gardens with a complementary climate. “The company’s first foray into green building was in Gurgaon with the ITC Green
Centre, which opened about three years ago. Hilary Clinton described it as a ‘monument to the future’ when she visited last year. So it was a very natural progression for ITC to create a luxury status green hotel.”
