FEEL GOOD FACTOR

With a new wave of healthcare centres set to come on stream in the Middle East, Oliver Ephgrave discovers the challenges involved in regional healthcare design and the desire to meet international standards

The Middle East’s healthcare industry has huge potential for growth. A December 2009 report by Alpen Capital projected that the GCC’s healthcare market will grow around nine percent annually to reach US$55 billion by 2020. The report also stated that the region may require more than 25,000 additional beds by 2020 to address the growing demand for inpatient treatments. In an effort to develop the region’s healthcare

services, a number of new facilities have been com- pleted or are underway, particularly in the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. But will the new healthcare centres measure up to current international standards or are they likely to be sterile, poorly planned environments? Simon Higgins, executive director of healthcare Middle

East, Africa and India for international consultants Cyril Sweett, believes that most of the new facilities are designed with the patients in mind. “Thankfully, both in this region and internationally, we’re moving away from dark rabbit warrens with labyrinthine corridors. Today’s healthcare architects and designers try to create a wellness feel by providing open spaces, family areas, and courtyards. Design can have a big impact on patient wellbeing.”
