“When sustainability wasn’t topical we would try and incor-
porate sustainable measures, even if they weren’t requested by the client. For example, some schemes that were built 10 years ago contain contemporary sustainability thinking but the client just accepted the measures as part of the decorative finish.” Sustainability is also a key consideration in Al Zeina, as Stevens
explains: “The entire Al Zeina development has been conceived to operate under Abu Dhabi’s Estidama policies. These include the use of local materials and traditional approaches to tempering the envi- ronment as well as recycling and low-energy technologies.” In addition, the project aims to respect and enhance the con-
ditions for the local ecology. Fry says: “The development takes into account the surrounding natural environment, and seeks to preserve natural habitats for the local marine and terrestrial ecology where possible.” She adds: “The UAE is well known as an international desti-
nation for bird watching, and each year the local bird population swells by over 500 percent when migrating birds stop over on their way from Africa and Europe to Asia. It is envisaged that these gardens will provide a location for both migrating birds and local protected bird species.”
