disposal on an iPad or Kindle is great in theory. But am I liable to sample or read 300 books while I’m trav- eling? Probably not.
Do I love the idea of having access to hundreds of
songs on my iPod? Sure, but that’s different. Songs are typically bit-sized nuggets that we randomize and customize, often according to our moods. I can blaze through 28 of my favorite songs a lot faster than 28 of my favorite books.
There will be situations where cramming a book
into your carry-on will be a much smarter choice than taking an iPad or reading content on an iPhone or iTouch. No, print is not dead, but it is evolving.
The iPad looks like a device that belongs to the year
2010. Let’s face it: 2010 doesn’t look much different from the year 2000, but the iPad carries with it the visual aesthetic of the future.
Print as a whole is redefining its role to the con-
sumer, and as more comic shops and local bookstores close, a new delivery system needs to be in place. Digi- tal might be one of the answers.
iTunes revitalized the single by offering consumers
the choice of paying $.99 for a single song. Marvel has done something similar, providing the latest (and clas- sic) comics for roughly $1.99 (currently most Marvel titles are $3.99 if you buy them at the comic shop). There are over 500 Marvel titles available, packing quite a wallop for the comics fan.
Dan Buckley, publisher and CEO of Marvel publish-
ing, called the App for iPad, an “unparalleled digital comic experience.”
“The iPad is the first device that offers us a chance
to present digital comics that are even close to repli- cating the experience of reading a print comic,” Buck- ley said. “This new world of digital comics distribution provides us great opportunities to reach new readers, allow consumers to sample our diverse stories and characters, and we believe it will drive these new fans into the App Store and local comic shops each week to find even more.”
Maybe. But this recent iPad launch has gotten
me excited about the evolution of how we read and disseminate information. Words and pictures were bound to be digitized.
What’s next? How about a DC Comics App? That, I can’t wait for. As Harvey Pekar has said, “Comics
are just words and pictures. You can do anything with words and pictures.”
At best, 2010 will be the year of
changing graphics and animating words.
THE SONY E-READER and Amazon’s Kindle may soon fall out of favor due to competition from the iPad, which offers full color and interactive touch features.
Online safety
ternet you need to be extra cautious. Cer- tain corrupt files can make your comput- er vulnerable to viruses. Make sure that you only download files that come from trusted sources.
Trojans and other computer viruses
can infect your computer and steal per- sonal information right from your sys- tem’s hard drive. Some Trojans and com- puter viruses can track keystrokes and report your personal information to an identity thief.
Use anti-virus and other security soft-
ware to keep thieves away from your com- puter. You need to regularly run your anti-virus and antispyware programs to scan your computer for problems.
It is a good idea to completely remove
your chats from the Internet. Be careful while sending and receiving e-mails or fill- ing in survey forms that require your per- sonal information. Criminals use email hoaxes to lure victims onto fake websites. Never respond to requests for personal or financial information.
In case you become a victim of identity
theft, immediately file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and have a fraud alert placed on your credit report.
This will prevent the thief from open-
ing any accounts in your name. Imme- diately notify credit card companies and banks to ensure your safety.

you have not heard from me but I have been extremely busy. But more importantly, many of you were wondering why “The Memory Train” was missing for the last few weeks.
I really appreciate all of the
calls and other expressions of concern, but I just had so many things to do, that I got behind and missed conduct- ing “The Memory Train.” But you can bet I am back and it is so wonderful of you loyal read- ers to be concerned. Thank you so much.
Now let’s get aboard “the
Train.” I hope everyone enjoyed a
very nice Easter weekend and regardless of what race, reli- gion or status is, there is a Su- preme Power controlling our existence. It is up to us to stop all of these murders, robber- ies and rapes, committed by some of today’s “thugs” who place no value on life.
Our word for today is “why?”

Why do kamikaze pilots wear helmets?

If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes?
Why is it that no matter what color bubble bath you use, the bubbies are always white?

When we are in the supermar- ket and someone rams our ankle with a shopping cart then apologizes for doing so, why do we say, “It’s all right”? Well, it isn’t all right.
Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that’s falling off the table, you always manage to knock something else over?
Papa John’s: A pizza paradise
Thousands of Detroit area pizza lovers have made a deli- cious discovery: Papa John’s Pizza. The company’s slogan, “Better Ingredients, Better Pizza,” is appropriate. Papa John’s also offers customers an exceptionally wide variety of choices. There are five Papa John’s locations: Detroit, Ferndale, East- pointe, Farmington and Clinton Township. The Detroit location is at 18472 Livernois. (313.863.7272). Pictured are Adrian G. Owens (left), president/CEO, Papa John’s Pizza, and O’Neil D. Swanson Sr., president, Swanson Funeral Home Inc., during a recent visit to the Michigan Chronicle.

In winter why do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we com- plained about the heat?
You can bet that I hate miss- ing writing this column and I think I put too much pressure on myself with my schedule. I can just say, I don’t know “why.”

(SD). The problem with today’s DVDs is that they only support SD and don’t have the neces- sary storage capacity to satisfy the needs of HD. That’s where Blu-ray comes in, it offers up to 50GB of storage capacity and enables playback, record- ing and rewriting of HD in all of the HD resolutions includ- ing 1080p. The format also supports high-definition audio formats and lossless audio. In addition to the greater video and audio quality, the extra storage capacity also means there will be plenty of room for additional content and special features.
This combined with the new BD-J interactivity layer ad- opted by Blu-ray will bring the menus, graphics and special features to a whole new level. For example, you will be able to bring up the menu system as an overlay without stop- ping the movie, and you could have the director of the movie on the screen explaining the shooting of a scene while the scene is playing in the back- ground. The advanced inter- activity combined with the
networking features of Blu-ray will also allow content produc- ers to support new innovative features such as download- ing extras, updating content via the web, and watching live broadcasts of special events. Thanks to the greatly en- hanced HD video and audio quality as well as the advanced interactivity and networking features, Blu-ray represents a huge leap forward in the DVD viewing experience and will offer consumers an unprec- edented HD experience.
What about Blu-ray
for PCs?
There are plans for BD-ROM (read-only), BD-R (recordable) and BD-RE (rewritable) drives for PCs, and with the support of the worlds two largest PC manufacturers, HP and Dell, it’s very likely that the tech- nology will be adopted as the next-generation optical disc format for PC data storage and replace technologies such as DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD- RAM.
