TAO - Taiko Drummers of Japan
Conductor and guest artists, the Taiko Drummers of Japan, plan to take San Diego by storm
when the awesome power and spectacle of an ancient Japanese drumming tradition comes to
the Symphony Hall stage. Athletic bodies and contemporary costumes meet explosive Taiko
drumming and innovative choreography. According to the San Diego Symphony, this show
has critics raving with its extraordinary precision, energy and stamina. TAO has performed
hundreds of sold-out shows for more than a million spectators.
The stars of TAO live and train at a compound in the mountains of Japan, reaching the highest
level of virtuosity only after years of intensive study. However, these performers each bring
non-traditional flair to the group by drawing on their diverse backgrounds: one as a hard
rock musician, another as a gymnast and yet another as a composer. They offer a young and
vibrantly modern take on a beautiful, traditional art form.
TAO - Taiko Drummers of Japan plays February16 at Copley Symphony Hall. For tickets and more information call

The Marriage Bed
Diversionary Theatre will produce the West Coast premiere of Nona Shepphard’s
The Marriage Bed. The story is simple and complicated: Jeni loves Val and Val loves
Jeni. But is that enough reason to get married, especially when you’re not sure your
girlfriend is over her ex, and one of you is not out to your family? Nona Shepphard
wrote the play after the United Kingdom approved civil partnerships in 2005. She
asked herself what same-sex couples had to ask themselves: “Do I want to make a

Aurelia’s Oratorio
“Oh what a circus, oh what a show.” Oh wait, that’s Evita. But it does apply to Aurelia’s Oratorio. Behind
the red velvet curtain lies Aurélia’s Oratorio’s topsy-turvy world of surreal surprises, tricks, and transforma-
tions. This is a show about dreams coming to life and the impossible. “See it all happen before your very
eyes.” Aurélia Thiérrée was first seen on stage as a young girl, performing with her parents Jean-Baptiste
Thiérrée and Victoria Thiérrée Chaplin, creators of the famous Cirque Imaginaire and Cirque Invisible,
which enjoyed a successful run at La Jolla Playhouse during the 1995 season.
Now an actress in her own right, Ms. Thiérrée has charmed audiences around the world with her new
show. Co-created with her mother Victoria Thiérrée Chaplin, and performed with Jaime Martinez, it is a
dazzling display of stage illusion, inspired by the magic of classic music hall and circus trickery.
Aurelia’s Oratorio plays February 3 – 28 at La Jolla Playhouse. For tickets and more information call 858.550.1010
