9TH ANNUAL
HILLCREST MARDI GRAS
STREET PARTY
Before we dutifully tuck away all our indulgences and any evidence that we gave
in to sin before the season of lent, we must first pay respects to the deities of hedo-
nism, bow to the DJ in the spinning dance tent and party like it’s 999 a.d.! This year’s
fête falls on Tuesday, February 16 and promises to dazzle us with treasures both
exotic and domestic.
From 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., University Avenue will be blocked from cars be-
tween First Avenue and Fourth Avenue. Live entertainment includes the wickedly
entertaining and ethereally lovely Chico’s Angels direct from Silverlake to introduce
an element of whoop-ass to the festivities.
Expect a motley lineup of special guest performers to lend their talents both
musical and otherwise. Among these are Stealing Love Jones with Esjay Jones, The
luscious ladies of Lips and the unforgettable personality, Jackie Beat. On the dance
stage, DJ Taj spins our souls into motion while the Ferocious Paris Antonette Queen
and her Galactic GoGo Dancers entice our spirits.
For those with a keen eye, and a V.I.P. pass, an exclusive meet-and-greet session
with actor Brent Corrigan awaits guests of the heated V.I.P. tent. Have your own copy
of The Rage Monthly signed by the dream boy himself. Food and various refreshments
will be served nearby so choose wisely from the veritable fountain of vendors. And
if it’s a beaded necklace you’re looking for, you know the drill! A healthy population
of drag personas will be there to cheer on your bare antics and reward your naked
bravery…or lack of shame. Among the names expected to attend are Morgan,
Babette Schwartz, LaDonna, Gigi and Tootie! More than 2,000 guests enjoyed last
year’s event, so cake on the renaissance makeup, slather on the body paint or just
come dressed as mystical wood sprite! Let the spirit of indulgence inspire you. The
advance ticket price is $15 and rises to $20 on the day of the event. V.I.P. passes are
$50 in advance and $75 on the day of. V.I.P. passes include express entry, a private
reception area, hosted bar, private restrooms and at least one exclusive celebrity
sighting! Buy your tickets at Baja Betty’s (1421 University Avenue), Urban Mo’s (308
University Avenue) or Obelisk Bookstore (1029 University Avenue). Only ages 21
and older will be allowed entry.
Tickets are also available online at
hillcrestmardigras.org. All ticket purchases
are tax-deductible. The event is presented by the GSDBA Charitable Foundation
and the Hillcrest Business Association. Proceeds from the street party benefit both
organizations. For more information on the GSDBA Charitable Foundation, visit the
website at
gsdbafoundation.com. Also backed by the Hillcrest Business Association,
proceeds from this street party benefit community improvement as well as helping
the GSDBA Charitable Foundation to issue their annual youth scholarships.
