This is the time of year when most
people run the risk of getting cold and flu. While it possible
to get 3-4 bouts of cold a year, flu is only contracted once
in several years.
Seasonal flu is caused by the influenza virus and affects
the nose, throat and lungs. It is very contagious and is
spread by breathing in droplets coughed or sneezed by
an infected person. Symptoms take 2-3 days to show and
include:
High fever – usually between 38C and 41C
Generalized aches and pains
Headache
Lack of energy and possible nausea
Swine flu is caused by a new flu virus strain (H1N1).
Symptoms are similar to normal flu, but certain people
are at greater risk of illness – pregnant women, children
under 5, adults over 65 and people suffering from certain
chronic illnesses.
