Breadth and balance
Activities and Service Programme
In addition to passing examinations we want to
provide situations where each pupil can develop the
ability to take responsibility, for themselves and for
others, both in school and in the world beyond.
Strong emphasis is placed on broadening
experience through our Activities and Service
Programme, an integral part of Oakham’s Total
Curriculum. Every pupil participates. From a huge
choice covering aerobics and film production to
stone carving and yoga, pupils can select a
different activity each term. Encouraged to stretch
their horizons, do something different and have
fun, many pupils discover hidden talents and new
passions. Third Formers also follow a life-skills
programme.
Fourth Formers onwards choose one of three
Service Options. Pupils can elect to experience
adventure and acquire new skills through
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award while others
become cadets in the Army or RAF section of the
School’s CCF (Combined Cadet Force). Alternatively,
they may choose Community Service which could
involve fundraising, working with Riding for the
Disabled, visiting the elderly, assisting in primary
schools or carrying out conservation work.
Outside school hours, clubs and societies
proliferate; many of them run by the students
themselves.
