Career Changes
On May 14, longtime Taylor County Expo CenterGeneral Manager
Tony McMillan announced his resignation, effective May 31. On medical
leave of absence since February, he had surgery to remove cancer. Cancer-
free when he resigned, McMillan said, “My biggest problem right now is just
a strength problem.” He joined the Expo Center’s board of directors in 1982,
and has been general manager for 19 ½ years. Administrative Vice-President
Rochelle Johnson stated, “The Expo Center staff has been honored to work
with him all of these years. He is a great man and we will miss him.”
Two barrel racers injured
Heather O’Neal-Howard, of Argyle, TX, was involved in a horse acci-
dent during the ABHA finals in Fort Worth on May 8. While the prognosis is
good for a full recovery, Heather will wear a “halo” brace for 3 to 6 months.
The Heather Howard Benefit Barrel Race is scheduled for August 28-29, at Di-
amond W Arena in Alvarado. There’s added money, and a silent auction will

Cheyenne Lueb, of Hereford, TX, suffered a bad fall in barrel racing
competition in Plainview on May 10. With her horse, Cash, running home, she
lost the reins, and when he turned hard to go down the alley, she was unseated
and hit a pipe support beam with her midriff area, suffering a badly broken
pelvis, 3 broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and a bruised spleen.
Deaths
68-year-old Victor Mitchell, of Monroe, LA, died April 18 in Houston,
from complications following a heart procedure. He loved to ride horses, and
several times he won his division in the Northeastern Louisiana CHA.
In mid-May, Gary and Susan Rosenbach’s 11-year-old red roan stallion,
Bets CD, died at a breeding facility in Weatherford, TX, where he had been
standing to the public.
Condolences to members of Circle L 5 Riding Club of Fort Worth,
whose 6 horses were killed in a barn fire on May 18. Two others were injured
badly and put down later. The club, a well-known African-American eques-
trian group, was established in the early 1950s and now boasts more than 80
members and participates in rodeos and parades across the state and beyond,
including the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo.
80-year-old Ernest “Buck” McGonagill, of Coleman, TX, died on May
25, after the May 16 death of Margaret Ann. The couple had married May
25, 1955. Buck was a member of the AQHA, NCHA, PRCA, and the ANRS
& Rodeo Exes Association of Sul Ross State University.
