THISSEASON:GENDERANDMONEY.
Afewseasonsback,somebrandsattemptedtomar-
kettomenandwomenseparately—evenwith
differentnamesforthesameshoes—withless-than-
successfulresults.Thisseason,theshoescarrythesame
namesandattempttoprovidethesamekindofrunning
experienceforrunnersofeachgender.Morethanone-thirdofthe
shoesinourreviewhavebeenmodifiedtoaccountfordifferences
betweenmaleandfemalerunners.Mengenerallyweighmorethan
womenandhavemoremusclemass,whichmeanstheycanmoreeasily
flexrunningshoes.Theyalsolandalittleharderthanwomendo.Designers
adjustedtheirshoestoaccommodatetheseveryrealdifferences.Formen,
thelandingareaisabitlargerandfirmer,whilethewomen’smodelsare,in
comparison,softerandmoreflexible.
Thesecondtrendhasbeenanoticeablejumpinprices.Thismayhavebeensometime
incoming,astheworldeconomyisshifting.Workerseverywhereexpecthigherwages,
thecostsofresourcesandtransportationhaveincreased,andthebottomlineisthebottom
line—runningshoesarenotwhattheyusedtobe. Whilethey’renotrocketscience,running
shoesaretechnical,andtechnology,researchanddeliveryhaveveryrealcostsassociatedwiththem.
Bothtrendscoincidewiththecontinuedpushtomakerunningshoesbetterabletohandlethe
idiosyncrasies ofthehumanfootand,byextension,makeyourdailyrunmorebeneficial.
