ITT wins funding for fact finding mission
A £70,000 boost to the Institute of Travel & Tourism will ensure it can set up a series of forums with universities and kick off a major research programme into the positive contribution of the travel industry to the UK. Working with Professor Rhodri Thomas from Leeds Metropolitan University, the ITT has secured funding from the Economic and Social Research Council to develop closer links with academics across the country. Thomas, who will be leading the project, said the deal would see more research on areas such as climate change and how it impacts on travel fed back to the industry. “This funding is to encourage an exchange of knowledge between travel businesses and universities,” he said. “It is positive that travel has been selected for support in this way. I’m looking forward to organising some stimulating events with senior professionals and academics on the
SUMMER CONFERENCE. Lord Adonis set to speak at Venice
THE FORMER government minister responsible for bringing travel together at the height of the ash cloud crisis is the latest speaker to be added to the line-up for next year’s ITT conference. Lord Adonis, who was transport minister
before the election, is expected to paint a full picture of the government’s response to the crisis in April. At the time, Adonis was accused of caving in
to pressure from the airlines when he lifted the ban on UK flights six days into the crisis. Also joining the line-up, which is led by
keynote speaker Terry Leahy, chief executive of Tesco, will be Fabio Mantegazza. The Monarch Group owner recently told TTG how the group, which owns Cosmos and the Monarch airline, is planning to work more closely with independent tour operators in the UK.
challenges facing the travel industry today.” ITT chairman Steven
Professor Rhodri Thomas
Freudmann said the deal would meet the thirst for knowledge among aspiring professionals in travel. “This will act as a catalyst to enable us to fund forums and to encourage knowledge exchange,” he added. “There is a clear gap
between academia and the industry – and we are determined to bridge that gap for the industry’s greater good.” One way which the ITT is looking to make full use of the funding is by mapping out more robust statistics about the positive role of the travel industry in the UK, Freudmann added. Initial findings from the project will be
unveiled at the ITT conference in Venice next June. As ITT professor, Prof. Thomas has been
tasked with strengthening the links between the travel sector and universities across the UK.

CHRISTMAS COCKTAILS.
Travel takes over Speaker’s House
A LUXURIOUS setting at the House of Commons rarely used for public events will set the scene for the ITT Christmas Cocktails on December 1. The Speaker’s House – the official apartment of the Speaker of the House of Commons, currently John Bercow MP – stands in the shadow of Big Ben in the Palace of Westminster. Each day, the Speaker and other officials
travel in procession from the apartments to the Chamber of the House of Commons – but on December 1 they’ll be letting the travel industry’s finest take it over. Tickets to the event are priced at £69.50 plus
VAT for non-members, and £49.50 plus VAT for members. All ITT events at the House of Commons are sponsored by P&O Ferries.
